Meerab made her way into her bedroom, peaking over her shoulder as she closed the door. There was no one except Haya a few meters out, peaking over the banniester of the stairs to ensure the coast remained clear and to deflect, should the need arise.
When Meerab turned, she noticed her lamp switched on in an otherwise dim room. It appeared just as she had left it- untouched. Her nikkah outfit hung on her wardrobe handle and the velvet gift boxes spewed on her bed.
She placed the bowl of haldi on her dresser and thought perhaps Murtasim had changed his mind or had gotten caught up- making him unable to reach her room. They didnt have much time- after all how long could Mariyum stall for before someone came looking for either of them.
Just as this realisation began to settle in, the door handle creaked and she spun around in anticipation.
The door opened to unveil her Murtasim, tall and handsome in a simple white shalwar kameez set and a yellow scarf bunched over his shoulder, hanging from his neck- curtesy of Mariyum.
He stepped in and quietly closed the door. A boyish grin spread across his face as he finally saw his Meerab in her mayoun outfit.
She could help but smile too- it was contageous. The apples of her cheek lifted and a pink spread over her cheeks, across her make-up free face. She looked fresh, like the epitome if the spring time- adorned in the fully bloomed floweres.
He stepped further into the room. 'Tumein tou haldi ki zaroorat bhe nahi, pehle he chaand lag rahee hou.' She looked even better than the photographs that he had received- the silver and gold of her suit making her dazzle.
'Sachi?' She giggled.
Meerab saw him taking in the way the dress draped down her waist and over her curves. She thought to treat him- she turned around a couple times so he could appreictae her outfit, her flowly shara lifting from the edges and the lace catching on the light, glimmering as it spun around her.
Murtasim reached into his kameez pocket and took a handful of the yellow petals, he had just pulled them off the baniester before entering her room. 'Muchi.' He lifted his first into the air, opening it and it sprinkled down upon her twirling.
It was raining petals in her bedroom.
This only encourgared her and she spun, untill all the petals had found their way onto the floor. The turning had made her dizzy, so as she slowed she almost toppled over onto her bed - she may slipped on a petal or two aswell.
But Murtasim didnt let her fall.
His arm reached out behind her back, his other arm coming for her wrist. Holding her up. 'Dehaan say, gir na jana.'
Her body wright balanced backwards, she looked up to him, the look of love in her eyes. 'Tum hou na, pakarnay kay liye.'
Of course he would always catch her. He was close, pulling her from her wrist. The yellow of the scarf, so vibrant against the dark of his beard. She could see the texture of his skin, the barley visable freckles on his cheek. Those deep brown eyes raking over her face, taking in every-detail. Savouring every second.
He wanted to kiss her. She was in his arms, wearing a pretty dress and smelling of tumeric and rose water. But there was just one more day, and his mannat, holding him back.
Instead he kissed her cheek softly for a second and pulled back to ask, 'Haldi kahan hai?'
On that cue, she stood up straight, balancing herself and and grabbing hold of his hand that was placed on her lower back just a moment ago. She guided him to her desk chair. 'Yahan behtou.' This was her room- her territory.
