tw // light mention of suicide

h a r r y

Mick had just come back with my backpack from downstairs when a doctor walked out of those fateful double doors.

All four of us stood up, meeting her halfway.

"I presume you're all with Ivory Henderson?"

Jenna answered for us, "Yes."

"Ivory is out of surgery now. It was touch and go for quite a while, but she's in the ICU now where she'll stay until her levels are stabilized. Once she's awake, a nurse will come and notify you."

"What levels?" I asked.

She looked surprised that we hadn't simply nodded to the information and parted ways with her. "Pardon me?"

"What levels need to be stabilized? What's wrong with her?"

"I've said all that I can say about Ivory's condition. Once she's awake, somebody will be out to let you know."

"When will she wake up?" Em asked.

We'd only been waiting about ten minutes by the time Dena called. This time, it was my phone she called.

"Go on and talk to her," Em said. "Just let us know what she says after."

I nodded and got up to take a walk.

I cleared my throat of emotion and answered the call. "Dena."

"Oh, Harry," Dena cried out softly. "Ivy just got out of surgery, did they tell you guys?"

"They did. The doctor couldn't say much, only that she was moved to the ICU."

"She's still in critical condition, but she survived surgery, which they told me was nothing short of a miracle." Dena paused as she got choked up. "They told me she lost half a liter of blood on the operating table, Harry. The bullet hit her renal artery and they ended up having to remove her left kidney, but the good news is the bullet didn't touch any other organs, nor did it hit her spine."

My mind struggled to keep up.

"Will she be okay without the left kidney? Is she at risk for infection? What if the—"
