CHAPTER TWO
CHARLIE
I THROW A LOOK at the stairs to the bathroom basement. Two women step up and wave to their friends as I continue glancing at them.
Another minute passes and I feel a pull to at least check. Maybe something happened?
She did seem anxious when she hurried away but maybe those were just nerves?
Was she a person who doesn't go to bar's often? That would explain to headphones still in her ears when she sat down.
I can't ignore the burn on my skin from when she looked at me. Something so unexpectedly calm about her gaze set fire to my insides. Those full lips pulled into a line made me want to sit closer to her, pull her closer to me. Anything to get her inside my private space.
I catch Ivy's attention with a nudge to her feet, "Is Hannah okay? She's been there for awhile."
Her eyes jump from me to the stairs and she nods, waving her hand away. "She's okay, just not used to the crowds."
The quick brush off only makes me shake my head and I pick myself up and venture down, waiting by the woman's bathroom for Hannah. A woman exits and I tap her shoulder to get her attention.
"Hey, was there a woman in there with dark curly hair? About 'aye high?" I motion to my lip line. The woman raises an eyebrow. "Earphones on?"
"Oh! Yes! She's just washing her hands..." She throws a quick look at the door and goes to the stairs, lingering a little.
When the doors open, Hannah hurries out, stumbling into me. I steady her and pull back my arms.
Her earthly eyes widen at me, as one earphone falls out of her ear. I catch it and smile at her, opening my palm so she can take it. She's still shocked, her eyes as wide as saucers.
"Wha—What are you doing?" She stammers out, confusion glancing between me and the earphone sitting on top of my palm.
"I was worried." My smile stretches into a grin as she steps back, taking the device back and stuffing it in her ear.
"You shouldn't be." She murmurs, walking past me, I stop her by gently grasping her elbow but she pulls it out of my hold with a quick motion.
"What do you think you're doing?" The aggression lacing her tongue makes me hide my grin and I point to my ears.
"What are you listening to?" I voice my previous thoughts and cock my head at the way her eyebrows furrow, my fingers itch to straighten out the crease between them.
"Baby, Justin Bieber." The seriousness causes me to chuckle and I smile at her again, the earthly tones in her eyes wonder over my hands and search for something under my flannel.
"Ahh, the hit of a century." I comment, straightening the cap on my head. It's worn out from countless of days in the sun. But it still does the job. "But if seriously?"
