A family was supposed to serve a purpose, she knew that. 6-year-old Meredith Grey knew that a family was supposed to serve a purpose, she just didn't know what. In her short life, she had not experienced the family that the other kids in school had, not the days out to the zoo, or the after school trips to the playground & ice cream parlours; instead, she experienced the hospital.
She belonged to one of the most pioneering female surgeons in the world Dr Ellis Grey & her father Thatcher Grey, who no longer worked, not since Meredith had been born. She never saw her mother much, only when she bothered to come home from the hospital and even then, it was typically at nighttime when Meredith was fast asleep so she spent a lot of time alone with her father, which was lonely and well...
Playing in her small bedroom with her anatomy Jane doll she could hear the other little girls playing outside on the tyre swing that they had made on the tree. She had never met the three little girls that played everyday but from watching and listening to them from her bedroom window, she knew that they were the same age as her and that they lived on the same block. The loudest one was called Amelia, Meredith recognised her from the times she was getting into her parents car, she lives two houses down. Sighing to herself, she decided to go downstairs to her dad.
"Daddy?" Her small voice echoed the living room where he sat in front of the tv. "Can you play with my dolly with me?"
"Not now Meredith." Thatched replied rolling his eyes.
"But I can't play on my own."
"Meredith." he said sternly, still not bothering to look at his daughter.
She walked around to him, standing in front of the tv before climbing up and sitting on the arm of the sofa. "Please daddy, it'll be fun."
"God damn it Meredith, I said not now!" He shouted and pushed her off the sofa.
Meredith hit the ground and winced. Thatched didn't even apologise, his eyes were straight back on the tv like she wasn't there, she slowly pulled herself up and walked away silently, holding her doll and looking at the ground as she fought back the water in her eyes. Once she reached her bedroom she sat on her bed and cried silently, a small pillow clutched to her chest with her knees tucked underneath. The pillow covered her mouth so her cries couldn't be heard, all she wanted to do was play and now she had a bruised hip. After consoling herself, she got up from her bed and walked over to the window, watching the other girls have fun for a couple more seconds before she shut the window so she could no longer hear their laughs.
Still staring out of the window, she noticed one of the girls looking back at her watching as she waved, she waved back before ducking under her window and crawling to her rug where the rest of her dolls were. Hours passed and without realising she had fallen asleep on the floor next to her dolls house, she turned to her purple digital clock on her bedside table which read 7:37pm, standing up and giggling to herself as her stomach made funny noises she headed downstairs to have some food.
"I'm hungry." She told Thatcher, standing behind the sofa he still sat on.
He sighed loudly before standing up and looking at her. "What do you want?" He asked walking into the kitchen with Meredith following him.
"Chicken & broccoli?" She asked as she lifted her arms up to him. He picked her up and placed her on the counter top next to the sink.
"You should have came down earlier Meredith, it's passed dinner time." He told her as he heavily handled the pots he was getting from the cupboards.
"Sorry. I fell asleep." She mumbled watching her dad shake his head.
"Will mommy be home tonight?" Her small legs kicking the cupboard as they swung.
"I don't know, why?"
"I miss her." she looked up at him.
"Meredith she has a job to do, that's her priority, not you. Stop sulking, just eat your food." Meredith nodded her head as she listened to her dad.
She knew she was never her mothers priority but it didn't stop her from hoping that she would be from time to time. As she sat at the table eating her food, she tried to ignore the pain coming from the forming bruise on her hip, but her father noticed her wincing and holding her side.
"What's wrong with you?" He pulled her chair out from under the table as she sat on it.
"What?" She asked.
"The noises your making, they're annoying."
"My.. my hip hurts." She stuttered.
"From falling off the sofa?" He scoffed. "Behave Meredith, it was nothing, you barely fell."
Once again, she just nodded her head mumbling a sorry before she finished her dinner. She crept her way back up the stairs to the four walls she seen the most of and changed into her pyjamas before getting into bed and letting sleep follow her, dreaming about the perfect home and the perfect family that she never had.
