Over the next few weeks Derek and Meredith began to get closer and closer, they spent a lot of time together and a lot of time in restaurants never getting bored of once another or running out of conversation, there had been a couple of times where they had to be asked to leave restaurants because it was closing and they hadn't even realised that they had talked for literal hours on end, time felt like nothing when they were together. There had been a few kisses here and there and although Meredith had previously been a relationship girl, Cristina was quite shocked to see her so settled and content with Derek so quickly, it was like they already knew each other before they did.
Cristina was currently planning Meredith's birthday party that she was surprising her with in a weeks time, it wasn't going to be a huge thing but big enough that the word about it would spread around campus but hopefully not get back to Meredith. She had pretty much organised everything and the only thing she had left to do was invite people which wouldn't be too hard because what college student didn't love a party? She closed her laptop quickly as the door to Meredith's bedroom opened, opening it back up when she saw only Derek emerge.
"What are you looking at?" He teased her smiling.
"Get your head out of the gutter." Her eyes rolled making him chuckle.
"Invite some of your friends to Mer's birthday next week if you want but don't let her find out." She told him quietly.
"It's her birthday next week?" Derek looked up.
"Yeah." Cristina dragged knowing that she would have caused some tension for them.
"She hasn't told me." Derek took a bottle of water out of the fridge, a small hint of sadness obvious, or maybe annoyance.
"I'm sure she would have. She never really celebrates but.." she finished shrugging.
"Hm." Derek nodded. "What day is it?"
"Friday."
"22nd of November?"
"Yep."
With that he left the kitchen heading back to Meredith's room. Derek didn't really know what to do with the information he'd learnt from Cristina, did she not want him to know? And what position did that put him in regarding getting her a gift? If she didn't want him to know it was her birthday, should he even acknowledge it if she doesn't tell him? He decides on trying to pry it out of her, he didn't want her to be disappointed on her birthday even though she kept it a secret, he wanted to show her that although he hadn't known her that long, that he did truly care about her. Sitting back down next to her on her bed, she curled back into him.
"What we're you talking to Cristina about?" Meredith looked up.
"What?" He was a little taken back.
"I heard voices." She blinked.
"Oh. Nothing, I was just helping her with some school work she was doing."
"You were?" A line appeared in between her brows.
"Yeah. Why?" Derek asked as he took his finger and smoothed out her frown.
"Cristina never lets anyone help. Just weird I guess." She laid her head back onto his chest.
Derek played with a few thin strands of her hair. "Do you want to do anything this weekend?"
"Nope."
"Are you sure? We could go for dinner, i know a really nice restaurant that I'd like to take you too."
She lifted her head and turned her body to face him, her green eyes narrowed.
"This weekend? Why?"
"No reason. I just thought it would be nice." He lied trying to analyse her reaction.
"I'd just like to stay home this weekend, with you." The pinky colour in her cheeks deepen.
"We can do that." Derek agreed and kissed her lips gently.
They could do that, spend her birthday doing something together, whatever Meredith wanted to do whether it be sit home and watch movies all day or create plans for the day but it the nighttime he couldn't promise her that it would just be them two because he knew it wouldn't be, not with the party that Cristina was planning. For the remainder of the night they just lay there content with one another watching movies before Derek decided he would head home and see Mark. He'd spent the last two nights at Merediths place and was beginning to think that his friend would no longer recognise him, he grabbed a crate of beer for the two of them to chat over.
"So, Cristina is throwing Mer a birthday party this weekend, I'm assuming you want to come?" Derek sipped his beer.
"Don't sound too excited." Mark said sarcastically. "What are you getting her?"
"Honestly man I have no idea, she doesn't even know that I know it's her birthday. She hasn't told me."
"What? Chicks love their birthdays."
"Obviously not this one. She got a little defensive when I brought up maybe going for dinner this weekend."
"Maybe she has a date with her other boyfriend." Mark teased him.
"Shut up." Derek shook his head. "If she doesn't want me to know about it do I even get her a present? I want too but.."
Mark rolled his eyes, he wasn't qualified to deal with girl problems but he'd try for Derek.
"Why don't you just get her something small, a bracelet or something. You've just met you don't have to go all crazy and that way she can't go mad at you if she doesn't want you to buy her anything."
"Mhm." Derek nodded draining the rest of his bottle of beer, he reached for another one, "since when did you talk girl?"
Mark cringed, "I knew I shouldn't have opened my mouth."
Derek just laughed and for a minute they sat there in a comfortable silence with their beer.
"So what did you do these past two nights." Mark smirked.
"Get your mind out of the gutter." Derek told him.
"My mind pays mortgage in the gutter." He smiled proudly, "so?"
"So nothing." Derek said.
"Damn really? Nothing?"
"Nothing. We're just getting to know each other."
"Well you can get to know each other in different ways." He raised his eyebrows making Derek laugh.
"You're disgusting." He laughed. "Mer's quite shy. I think maybe she had a bad relationship or something."
"Or maybe she just got out of a relationship." Mark added.
"I have no idea." Derek pouted.
The two of them watched replays of a football game before going to bed, Derek's phone had died whilst hd was watching the football match so when he plugged it on charge and it restarted, his phone opened to a message from Meredith fifty-five minutes ago.
'I enjoyed spending time with you. Talk tomorrow :)'
Derek just liked the message because he thought it was too late to respond and that she would most likely be asleep. He scrolled through his own social media before setting down his phone and turning off his light for the night.
