Beep. Beep. Beep. It was all I could hear. The room was dark and there were machines all around me. Tubes from my arms and a monitor on my chest. I woke up like I did before and felt my tummy.
“DANIEL...DANIEL...DANIEL...”
I was as if he was waiting outside the door to save me. My knight in shining armour always there to catch me when I fall. He burst into the room with fear running through his veins. God only knows what was going through his mind with me screaming like that.
“Where’s Harry? Where is he? Why can’t I feel him moving?” I burst into tears.
Daniel grabbed me and pulled me as close to his chest as possible. My safe place. I knew I was ok as long as I could feel his heart beating.
“Shhhhh” he said as I could barely breath I was crying so hard.
Stroking my hair he soothed me. He always knew how to calm me down.
“He is ok. Don’t worry. You need to focus on getting better. You had to go back into the OR. You bled out and they had to deliver Harry by caesarean.”
“But he is only 32 weeks. He is too little he won’t survive.” I said as I pulled away.
“You have to stay in bed. He is doing well. You can see him soon I promise.”
“No I have to go now.” I began pulling the tubes and wires off of me and the beeping got louder and the nurses rushed in to calm me down. I kicked and screamed pushing the nurses away. Daniel knew the only way to calm me down was to resist me. He couldn’t let me get away with pushing them away. He rushed towards me and grabbed my shoulders, turning me round to face him. Automatically I slapped him. He shook me and told me to listen.
“Aoife. You are acting like a child who hasn’t got their own way. Stop it right this second. I am not letting you hurt any of these people just because you are angry at yourself. If you want to hurt someone make it me. I should have protected you from this. I should be the one you should be angry at because I didn’t take good enough care of you.”
I heard his voice start to break. He was crying and all because I was acting like Ciara does when she doesn’t get her own way when she knows well enough that she was wrong in the first place. But Daniel is wrong too. He isn’t to blame for this. This is no one’s fault. You cannot see this disease coming that it why it known as the silent killer.
