August 1994 - Malfoy Manor
Malfoy Manor was like a rainy fantasy come true. The fog sat over the mountains surrounding it. Dad said this was a formal dinner, so I had to look nice. But I think he noticed how I intentionally overdressed. Just a little. I wore chunky emerald heels, but I'm so short that they still didn't make me any taller than 5"6. I wore wide-leg nice black pants that cinched at the waist. My shirt was a deep black velvet with stars all over it. The sleeves were long and they flared. I had given myself Hollywood curls and a bold red lip. I didn't look fourteen, but I was ok with that. I had a smirk as I checked my reflection while our carriage parked.
"Remember what I said, Grace," Dad reminded me.
"How hard could it be to follow one rule?" I asked innocently.
I'm many things. But I'm not boy-crazy. I know the difference between innocent flirting and a real relationship. I was certain I'd fall for Draco. All the math was there to add up that I would fall for Draco. But I wasn't sure if I'd fall hard enough to disobey my dad's only rule. But no matter what, I wanted to make sure Draco fell for me. Evil? Maybe a little. But that's ok. At least with me.
I stepped out of the carriage slowly with a look of destiny on my face. Ever since I met my dad, I had discovered this new part of me. A part of me that took control. A strange ambition. Dad rang the doorbell and a small elf-like creature answered it.
"Mr. And Miss Snape," he said slowly, looking down. "Welcome." We walked in slowly, and Mr. Malfoy walked into the grand foyer next to a beautiful central staircase. I was taken aback by him. I couldn't explain why I was so intrigued by him. I felt an urge to straighten up and put on my best classy lady composure.
"Severus," he said. "Good to see you. And you must be Grace," he said. I reached my hand out to shake his.
"Nice to meet you, sir," I said.
"Quite the resemblance," he said. "Narcissa!" He hollered. Mrs. Malfoy entered from the side. I could tell by the look of her that she was a kind soul coated in a snobby aristocratic paint.
"Welcome," she said. "Grace. So lovely to meet you." I smiled. "Where is Draco?" she asked. "Draco! Come down here, please!" My heart started racing, but I kept my composure. I was waiting so eagerly to see him come down the stairs. And when he finally did, my heart skipped a beat. He didn't even look up coming down the first half of the stairs. He was adjusting the sleeves on his fitted black shirt. His blonde hair was just wild enough to make a girl go crazy and just neat enough to be appropriate for this fancy dinner. He was gorgeous.
When he looked up, we locked eyes, time froze, and he started walking slowly down the stairs. I couldn't take my eyes off him and for a moment he couldn't take his eyes off me. He looked at my dad.
"Professor," he said. Then he turned to me. "And you must be Grace." My heart stopped when he said my name.
"And you must be Draco," I said back. There were at least four feet between us, but it felt like there was no space at all.
"Well," Mr. Malfoy said. "Let's go and eat. And afterward, Grace and Draco can get to know each other while the adults have a," he turned and looked at my dad, "fun conversation."
Mr. Malfoy sat at the head of the table. On his right was his wife, and on his left was my dad. I sat next to my dad, and Draco sat next to his mom. Something told me to lay off my assertiveness. So I brought myself to take my eyes off Draco, which I could tell bothered him. Good.
"So Grace," Mrs. Malfoy said. "Are you excited about starting school?"
"Oh yes," I responded. "I think I'll be alright to study amongst the other fourth years. My dad's been helping me catch up."
