August 1994 - Malfoy Manor/The Quidditch World Cup
Draco grabbed my hand and dragged me up the stairs. I could hardly contain my excitement.
"So here's your room," he said as he opened the door for me. "Mine is right around the corner if you need anything." I heard the door close downstairs and realized my dad was gone. I knew it was time to start saying the things I really wanted to say.
"Did you do that on purpose?" I asked. He smiled nervously.
"Do what?"
"Give me a room close to yours." I leaned in a little closer. He chuckled.
"I'm just trying to be a good host," he said.
"So whatever I need?" I asked.
"Whatever you need," he repeated. We were so close, one more move would have landed my first kiss. But I don't kiss on the first date. If that's what you called it. He pulled away.
"Go ahead and get settled and then meet me downstairs. It's a little too early to go to bed. Oh, and there are some pajamas in that drawer in case you didn't like my mom's."
When I opened the drawer, I pulled out an oversized T-shirt and a pair of flannel pants. I could tell they were his, they smelled just like him. I changed and inhaled the smell of his cologne.
I'm wearing Draco's pajamas, I thought to myself. I couldn't help but smile as I stared at myself in the mirror.
"Enjoying yourself, are you?" I heard a voice say. I turned to see Draco leaning in the door frame, wearing pajamas.
"Well it's not every day I get to wear the pajamas of the one and only Draco Malfoy," I said.
"Keep them," he said. "Then it will be every day that you get to wear them."
What did he just say? Oh my god. What is happening? I walked towards him.
"But if I keep them, they'll stop smelling like you," I said.
"Then you can bring them back and I'll give you more," he said, stepping closer. Once again, one more move and it would have been my first kiss. "I know you're obsessed with me, anyways."
"Oh do you, now?" I asked. "I think if I was obsessed with you, I wouldn't be in my own room."
"Well, I didn't say I was obsessed with you," Draco scoffed under a smile. "At least not yet. We have to wash you clean of that muggle world, don't we?"
"You don't mind that I'm halfbood?" I asked.
"It's not ideal," Draco said. "But it's not your choice. You have a muggle mother, but as far as I'm concerned, you don't have a mother anymore. Fully embrace your wizard half, and you're pureblood to me."
"So are you gonna teach me how to fully embrace my wizard half?" I asked him.
"We can start with the basics," he said. "What's your favorite show?"
"Animaniacs," I said.
"First of all, that's childish," he said. "Second, you're going to have to give that up. I have an alternative for you. If you're up for it."
I nodded eagerly as he grabbed my hand and led me around the corner to his room. He turned on the TV right across from his bed.
"You have a whole TV in your room?" I asked. He chuckled. He crawled into his bed and extended his arm like an open invitation. I crawled into bed with him, and he put his arm around me as I rested on his chest. I was just praying that he couldn't hear my heart trying to beat out of my chest. After a while, he finally looked at me.
"So are you obsessed with me yet?" I asked. Every ounce of blood in my body rushed to my head, but I played it cool.
"It's not a question of 'am I,' but a question of what to do with it," he said.
"Well," I said, restraining myself from everything I wanted to do in that moment. I remembered my dad's words. "Maybe we give it a while?"
"I can wait," he said, redirecting his attention to the TV. A huge smile overpowered my face as I realized exactly what I was doing.
I was in Dracos's bed, watching cartoons with his arm around me, wearing his pajamas. And he was obsessed with me.
At the game, I was wearing the same thing I had worn to dinner, but when I saw what everyone else was wearing, I felt way too overdressed. Then I looked around at who I was with. You could certainly tell I was with the Malfoys. Draco looked striking in his black suit. We were checking out the view when Draco noticed his father talking to someone. He told me he'd be right back and walked over to his dad. I took a second to soak in the reality of my life.
This is cool.
And Draco is hot.
Damn it Grace, don't get ahead of yourself.
But how could I not? How could I not fall head over heels? It seemed like he had, he was just holding it back. I was 90% sure I was fully won over by him, but I had to make him work for that 10%.
I started walking over to them when I saw Mr. Malfoy hit Draco slightly with his cane.
"Don't boast, Draco," he said. I ran up behind him and grabbed his arm. He looked at me and we smiled at each other before continuing to our seats.
I'm sure quidditch is a fascinating sport. But unless Draco is on the team at school, I don't think I'll ever pay attention. The game was the least interesting thing about the night. And when we were leaving, Draco said something that made my heart stop.
"You did something I didn't think could be done," he said.
"And what was that?"
"Got me to look at something other than the game."
Mentally I screamed.
