September 1994 - Hogwarts
"So you and Cedric? Is that official," Jane asked me in the morning when she woke up. It had been about a week since our first date. We'd been almost inseparable. I was doing my best to balance Cedric and my friends. I was also really trying to make sure Draco knew that I still wanted to be friends with him more than anyone.
I smiled as I put my book down.
"He asked me yesterday," I said excitedly.
"Your first boyfriend?" I nodded eagerly, unable to contain my smile. "And Cedric Diggory? Damn. Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I got in late last night," I explained. "I didn't want to wake you."
"How was it?" she asked. "Tell me everything." I sighed remembering the magical night.
"Oh, it was so romantic," I said. "We were in Hogsmeade, right? First, we went to a bookshop and he bought me a book."
"Love it," she said.
"Then he bought me a butterbeer and wiped the foam off my mouth."
"Love it again."
"And then as we were walking back to school, he told me to open up the book he bought me. So I did. I opened it right in the center, and it started snowing."
"No," Jane said.
"Yes," I said back.
"OMG shut up," she said.
"I know," I said. "So I looked at the book and it was a blank page. And then the words Be My Girlfriend? just appeared on the page as if someone was writing it." Jane fell over on the bed when I told her.
Oh my god, that is amazing," she said. "He's got game. Please tell me he kissed you goodnight," she said.
"Um, no," I said quickly. The thought of Cedric kissing me...it didn't disgust me. But I just didn't feel like it was there yet. "But I'm glad he didn't. I've only known him for a week. I don't feel like we're on a kissing level yet. I want my first kiss to be earned. Ya know? Like he has to work for it."
"Oh I get it," Jane said. "Ready to go get breakfast and see your man?" she asked. I smiled.
"So ready," I said.
As we walked to the great hall, I noticed that we were walking behind him and his friends. Jane and I looked at each other and smiled. I ran ahead of her and hugged him from behind. He looked down at me and smiled, wrapping his arms around me. He gave his friends a look to tell them to go on. They left us alone.
"Hey you," he said. Then he grabbed my chin and pulled me in for a kiss, but I stopped him. In a nice way, I shook my head to say no.
"What do you mean, no?" he said, a little more stern. I hesitated. That was unexpected.
"I just...I'm not there yet," I explained.
"You're my girlfriend and I can't even kiss you?" he said. He was getting a little angry.
"Well, we've only known each other for a week. I've never kissed anyone before. I'm just not-"
"Okay forget it," he said, walking away. "Talk to me when you're ready to be a good girlfriend." Just like that, he left me there. Jane caught up with me.
"What was that?" she asked. "Oh my god, did he just break up with you?"
"No," I said. "He tried to kiss me and I...I said no. And he said to find him when I'm 'ready to be a good girlfriend.'"
