Reeling from the conversation with ALISTAIR, ORLA finds a tree with large thick branches in the forest. She climbs into the canopy and finds a place to sit, her back resting against the truck and her legs resting on a branch. She stares into the dark night.
Awhile later, BENJAMIN appears.
Benjamin: I'm interrupting.
Orla: Please, interrupt me. Sit.
BENJAMIN goes so, so that he is sitting right-angled to ORLA.
Where's Tia?
Benjamin: Distracting Amun and Keba so that I might be able to hide for a short while.
Pause.
It's frustrating, having someone watching you all the time.
Orla: I know the feeling.
Benjamin: The little one, Maggie?
ORLA exhales. She nods, almost imperceptibly.
Orla: When I was bitten, screaming and roiling in pain...Maggie didn't need to come find me. She could've heard and run the opposite direction. I was frightened and alone, and then she appeared and took my hand and suddenly I felt...safer. I owe her for that.
Benjamin: You owe her the beginning. That does not mean you owe her the middle and the end.
ORLA considers this.
Orla: We have eternity, right? In theory. I want to use that eternity, every moment of it. I don't want to be stuck in between four walls...anywhere.
Benjamin: She'll come round to understanding that. It's just going to hurt her a little first.
Orla: I don't want to hurt her, Benjamin.
BENJAMIN places his hand on her knee. Just then ALISTAIR flies past. He smirks. ORLA frowns. BENJAMIN follows her gaze.
Benjamin: What was that about?
Orla: He accused me of being in love with you...which I am of course but I'm not going to tell him that. It's a deep rich friendship-love.
Benjamin: I suspect I also have fallen in friendship love with you.
Orla: It's only been a week but I wish always to know you, and Tia.
Benjamin: Agreed.
BENJAMIN looks in the direction of ALISTAIR.
He doesn't deserve you.
Orla: Yet.
Pause. Suddenly, ORLA has decided and nods determinedly. She turns to BENJAMIN.
Love you, beautiful.
Benjamin: Love you.
In a fluid motion, ORLA drops to the ground and runs after ALISTAIR. She calls to him, calmly.
Orla: What are you so afraid of?
ALISTAIR stops and turns.
Alistair: What?
Orla: I understand you are mistrustful. I understand it is your defence mechanism. You tell the people, who try to look too closely at you, all the horrible truths about themselves and hope they'll recoil.
Alistair: Look, you don't know me.
Orla: No, I don't.
Alistair: And you don't want to.
ALISTAIR gets close to her face, she doesn't blink.
You think how I am is just a cold exterior. But it goes through to my core. It's not what I want people to think, it's what I am.
