Over the next few days, ORLA trains with her fellow vampires, seeks out ALISTAIR to talk to him in the attic and the woods, tries to be tender towards MAGGIE, sits and laughs with LIAM and SIOBHAN.
Day 13: Afternoon. ORLA walks into the house, 'Noughts and Crosses' in her hand. MAGGIE whooshes in front of her.
Orla: Hi.
Maggie: Hi.
She holds up the book.
Orla: There are sequels of this, right?
Maggie: Mm, I think there are 6.
Orla: Perfect. Something to read when all this wraps up.
MAGGIE doesn't respond. ORLA walks up the stairs.
Where are Siobhan and Liam?
Maggie: Talking with Carlisle.
They walk into the living room where they find CARLISLE, LIAM and SIOBHAN laughing.
Liam: Those were the days.
Orla: Which war are you talking about now, Liam?
Liam: War stories are my favourite, it's true.
Carlisle: We were just reminiscing, Orla.
Liam: The Eleven Years War. No one does rebellion like the Irish.
GARRETT appears.
Garrett: You lost the Eleven Years War.
Liam: Aye, but it was one hell of a rebellion. Carlisle was on the wrong side, of course.
CARLISLE puts his hands up.
Carlisle: I admired Cromwell's conviction.
LIAM growls.
It was Alistair who tore your leg off. If you're going to be upset with anyone...
ALISTAIR appears.
Alistair: I apologised at the time. I also retrieved it for you.
Liam: You stood a mile off and threw it in the dirt beside me.
Alistair: If I'd got too close –
Liam: I would've had both your legs, to be sure.
The men chuckled now. ORLA watches ALISTAIR with interest.
Orla: What a bizarre story.
He clears his throat, somewhat embarrassed by her attention, and disappears. ORLA, used to him disappearing, sits down on the arm of the sofa.
Liam: What a time. Those were the good ole days – when wars were waged and fought, not threatened.
Orla: Oliver Cromwell. I suddenly feel very young.
Siobhan: That's because you are very young, my pet.
SIOBHAN moves to stand beside her, stroking the hair out of ORLA's face.
Orla: How did vampires even become involved in human wars?
The faces became grave.
Liam: No such thing as a "human" war. Humans are puppets. And wars are good eating.
ORLA considers this.
Carlisle: It's complicated. Humans are more than capable of fighting of their own accord, but vampires would become involved to further their own agenda's. Territory, power, influence, gold...peace. Vampires would often be on both sides.
