❛ am i going to need an alibi? ❜

STELLA ROUTLEDGE NEVER got dressed up. She never had the money or the time to make herself look good. She wore the same thing every day. A bathing suit, t-shirt, shorts and Converse. It was her thing. Dresses and high heels weren't. And yet, here she was, standing in the view of Kiara's full length mirror, watching the blue silk of her dress slide under her fingertips.

Stella cranked her head to the side. She couldn't place it but she didn't look like herself. "I hate this."

Kiara groaned as she grabbed their flower crowns. Stella's white and hers pink. She handed it to Stella. "I know. It's disgusting."

"I know, it's just horrible," Kiara's mother said as she entered the room. "I'm asking you to relax and go to a fun party."

"I look like a bourgeoisie pig."

Stella stifled her laughter into her hand as she adjusted her head piece.

"Will you please not worry about socioeconomic injustice for one night?"

"Mom, people not three miles from here have no power, no running water. Hell, Stella doesn't even have running water right now."

Stella's eyes widened as she turned to face Kiara. "Oh, uh, we don't know if the hurricane is why. I forgot to pay our water bill so..."

Kiara shook her head at her friend. "We're going to Midsummers, Mom. That's so tone-deaf."

"Do you know how hard we had to work to get into the Island Club?"

"Yeah, Mom. How could I forget? You had to grovel for, like, ten years—"

"Twelve," Anna corrected, "and we also had to cough up a huge chunk of dough. And do you know why we did that?"

"To keep up with the Joneses?"

"No. So you could have the same experiences that I had as a child. That you can enjoy with your friends, like Stella." Anna stepped closer to Kie. "Honey, do you know what the Island Club is?"

"A collection of spoiled trust-funds who brag about their riches to other trust-funds?" Stella suggested.

"A factory farm for debutantes," Kie added.

"It is a nice place, with nice people, where you can do fun stuff," Anna corrected.

"With out-of-touch rich people while the island sinks slowly into the ocean."

"Okay, I want you to put on your party face, Kie, if you wanna live." Anna walked out of the room, leaving Stella and Kie to gaze at each other. "Your mom scares me," said Stella.
