Is he... Conscious?"
"Try slapping him to see if he'll wake up."
"That's a good idea, Dust. We need more brains like yours around here."
The amount of sarcasm in Horror's voice almost causes me to laugh. What makes it even better is the fact that Dust genuinely thinks he means it.
I'm leaning against a wall, smirking at this stupid scene in front of me. Asgore these guys are idiots... And to think I have to work alongside them for Nightmare.
"What happened?"
"Well, I think Dust may have pushed him down the stairs," Error intervenes, looking up from his phone. His home screen is a picture of him and Ink as kids... As friends... The way it used to be before they grew up. A part of me still thinks they're good friends, but I don't know anything.
"Oh, that makes sense. Well, Dust, then I don't think Boss is going to be very happy."
"Why? I pushed his poor beloved husband down the stairs?"
Killer groans, lifting his head. "What is your problem, you dumbass? I'm not his husband. At all. Where did you get this grand idea that the Boss fancies me, huh?"
"Because I'm not blind to this type of thing. Unlike you, obviously. I can tell very well when someone likes someone else. Or else I wouldn't've had the confidence to ask Blue out, y'know?"
Killer groans again. He has a lot of patience, or else he would be lashing out at Dust. He also appears to be masking the pain he sustained from the injury to his head. For once, I feel genuinely had for him.
"Cross, couldn't you help us out?" Dust asks.
"What? In carrying Killer up the stairs? No. He's not that heavy; you guys can lift him just fine."
Dust rolls his eyes. "Be like that then. Come on, Horror. You know where Killer's room is, right? We'll take him up."
The two of them disappear up the steps, carrying an injured Killer to his room. I sigh... Why did Nightmare decide that having idiots like these three around was such a good idea? He must really like Killer, huh? He must really like Killer...
"Aren't you going to eat?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah, I guess... Thanks for cooking again, Horror. You're the best."
Horror doesnt back off after this. He just stares at me, a concerned look on his face.
"Are you okay?"
"What? Me? I'm fine. Perfectly fine."
"You're a bad liar."
He continues to stare into my eyes unnervingly. I shudder under his gave. At times, Horror can certainly intimidate. But he's such a nice person that he doesnt often do it.
"Have you ever known me to act like I'm okay, Horror? Like an idiot? I'm not like that, okay? And I'm fine. Stop worrying."
The Boss seems very fidgety, very nervous, as if he expects someone or something to snap. He seems to hold his breath, staring at person to person with a look of anxiety burning in his glowing green eye. And he opens his mouth to say something, but immediately shuts it.
"Nightmare, is there something you'd like to say?" Error asks, obviously feeling the mutual need to bring Nightmare's anxiety to the table's attention.
Nightmare sighs. "No," he lies calmly, and he sounds just as believable as he always does. "I was about to tell Horror and Cross to shut up, but it looks like they've handled it maturely on their own. No need for me."
Error doesnt believe him for an instant, and neither do I. The other three at the table are, indeed, the biggest morons I've ever met, so they're not even paying attention. But they're not heartless, I know that much. In fact, Horror seems to be the most openly compassionate. Killer and Dust tend to keep things bottled up.
"Are you sure it wasn't something else?"
Nightmare's eyes drift to the bandage Horror had wrapped around Killer's skull. Of course that was what worried him... He seems to be the one to care most about our little tar pit idiot. Our special idiot.
Killer lifts his head, obviously feeling Nightmare's gave directed onto his skull.
"Are you okay, Boss?" he asks, raising a hand to the bandage.
Nightmare points a shaking finger to it. "How... How... Where... When... That..."
He pales a little, and I feel my heart lurch. I've never seen him more worried before in my life... Poor guy...
"It doesnt hurt. This happened hours ago. You were in your room. Probably didn't hear me fall down the steps. But I swear I'm good. And it was an accident."
Nightmare squeezes his own arm to keep himself from hyperventilating, as he clearly wants to. He was just being dramatic. It wasn't that bad, Killer said so.
"You... You fell down the stairs?! Killer, you realize we live in a giant castle, right? You could've died from falling down the stairs! Are you crazy?!"
Oh... Duh...
"No, I... I'm very clumsy. Whoops!"
Dust releases a sigh of relief. We all know what kind of trouble he would've gotten in if Killer had ratted him out. But Killer is a loyal and nice person. He would never do that to a close friend like Dust.
"Boss, eat," Horror begs, rising from his chair. "Everybody... Please. Especially you, Killer. You need this."
"Hell yeah! Even better that you made it, bud! Thanks!"
That settles it. Everybody returns to eating, except Nightmare, who rises from his chair and shakily walks up the steps to his room. Error sighs, staring after him.
"You idiots keep eating," he mumbles. "I'll take his dinner up to him. Poor guy... Doesnt know what to do..."
He grabs Nightmare's plate and follows in his footsteps. For a few minutes following this, the table is silent. Then, Dust starts to joke with Killer, eventually getting Horror involved. Naturally, I eat as quickly as I can to get away from them.
So, I head up to my room to overthink and ponder and worry. It's what I do. Sitting alone in the dark with my door locked so that nobody can come in? Who doesnt like it?
