Halle's POV
Walking back down to the lobby, Ryan decided to take my keys and drive us back home. My mind was running all over the place and so many emotions are building up in me.
Janet Jackson is my mother?
Michael's little sister?
Penny from Good Times?
Justice from Poetic Justice?
Rhythm Nation Janet?
THAT Janet Jackson? Nah, can't be.
"Bitch not Janet Damita Jo your damn mama. Chile, I LIVE." Ryan said out of nowhere. She was merging to another lane on the highway, damn near riding the trunk of the car in front of us. I playfully rolled my eyes as she cackled from her outburst.
"Girl if you don't stop riding the tail of that car and slow up a bit." I fussed. She waved me off dismissively.
"And she's not anything until that DNA test comes back. This is too freaking crazy and not even a Wattpad story could make this up." I said.
"Not the Wattpad stories!" We laughed but soon my laughter died.
"Ry, what if she's really my mother? How am I supposed to process this as if my 21 years of living wasn't missing that void? She explained why she gave me up but what am I supposed to do with that information? All of her resources and money and she couldn't find lil ole me? She only tried looking for the first 3 years." I said.
"Sis, I don't know what to say that'll bring you comfort, but let's just take it one step at a time. Janet is pretty adamant that you're her daughter so let's just ride this out until we know for sure." She suggested.
"You're right. I'll go with the flow and take it one day at a time." I confirmed.
"Right, so let's order Doordash when we get home and catch up on Housewives." She said.
"Ok, sounds good."

Halle's POV, next day
I have a 30 minute break at work and kinda feel bummed I won't have time to eat but this meeting with Janet is important. I told my boss I may be a little late coming back and he was cool about it since I'm one of his best employees.
I'm super scared about the outcome and don't really see any of the positives right now. If Janet's my mom, I'll have to figure out if I really want her to be in my life because so much is at stake. If she's not my mom, then I'll be crushed for getting my hopes up for the "what ifs" of finally having a relationship with a blood relative.
I parked my car and headed inside the clinic. It wasn't packed and I spotted Janet sitting down with shades on. She was on the phone as Joey sat across the aisle. I stepped closer to them and she lifted her head up and smiled.
"Good morning Halle. How are you?"Janet asked me. I shrugged my shoulders and sat down next to her.
"I'm alright, ready to get this test over. How are you?" I asked. She shrugged her shoulders just like me.
"I'm ok. I'll be better once everything is confirmed. Let's go to the back since I know you're on a time crunch." She said.
I followed her as a nurse walked us to the back. She opened the door and an Asian woman was behind her desk. We stepped into the office and she smiled once she saw us.
"Jan! It's so good to see you!" She spoke as she stood up to giver her a hug.
"Hey Kim. It's been too long but good to see you girl." Janet said back.
