CHAPTER ELEVEN ;
frenemies?
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

JUNE 1972

"I just don't get it!"

Pandora sighed, spitting her gum into a bush. The poor thing had been stuck listening to Layla's ranting for what felt like hours, barely getting the chance to give her input. "Layla, doll, i don't think there's any deep meaning to this. He's a weirdo, freakish, teen boy loser!"

That answer simply didn't cut it. Why the hell would Maximoff spend months tormenting her, just to one day call it quits? To ask for a damn truce?

The brunette shook her head, a stubborn frown creasing her features.

"Why would he even bother though! I mean, he's the one who starts things-"

"-and he's the one ending things! Maybe he's matured!" Pandora cut her off, rolling her dark eyes. Layla simply didn't listen, ever, that much was obvious from the way her nose scrunched in annoyance, and the firm headshake.

"What, his balls just dropped overnight? Not damn likely!"

Her response made made Pandora choke on her own words. Not that Layla had never had attitude before, of course she did. But the tone of which she said it was so unlike her, a stark contrast to her usual unbothered, bored tone.

She sounded angry. And neither of the girls knew why.

"Maybe you just need to... I dunno, talk to him?" The taller girl suggested cautiously. It was rare for Layla to get this worked up over things, at least visibly. Sure, she got mad at stupid things while alone, and she certainly got mad when that stupid little silver freak was near. But right now? She was a ticking time bomb, having had multiple small outbursts on the walk home alone.

It was almost like Peter's presence in her life had given her something to focus on, it had given her some sort of routine. He had been a constant antagonist in her boring little life for months, and just the thought of him no longer being around confused Layla. And that confused Pandora.

"Talk to him? No! Why the fuck would i talk to him, he's out of my life now, finally! Thank God!" Layla said firmly, shaking her head and speeding up. "C'mon, I thought we were going to get pizza? Lets go!"

The girl felt pandoras deep brown eyes on her back as she speed walked towards the Highstreet. Although she couldn't see her face, she knew damn well what expression Pandora was pulling. It was the same look she pulled when they got assigned an extra long history assignment, or when they were doing circuits in gym class.

Irritation.

It almost made Layla feel guilty, pissing off one of her only friends.

The girl spun back around, sighing. "Sorry. I'm just... tired. I'll stop talking 'bout it now, yeah?"

Pandora slowly nodded, pursing her lips. "Yeah. Let's go get pizza."

"I'm home!" Layla called, although the house was clearly empty. Her dads beat up car wasn't in the drive, and the radio was off.

To Layla, an empty house was a good house. It meant she could actually go make food without the constant bickering in her ear. Sometimes, she wondered why her parents never realized they could sit in different rooms, with the door shut. That's what she did, anyway.

The thought of her parents always put a bitter taste in her mouth. With how much they argued, she really didn't understand why they stayed together. She supposed it was the fear of being outcasted, divorce was wrong in the eyes of the church. But Layla thought that was a stupid reason to stay in a marriage so dull.

The girl believed with her full heart and soul that if she was ever in a marriage with someone she despised, Jesus could go suck it. She would get a divorce if she damn wanted to.

She tossed her bag at the bottom of the stairs, not even bothering to take her shoes off as she made her way into the kitchen.

"Goddamn it." The brunette grumbled, opening the bread bin to find it empty. Instead, she moved over to the cupboard, searching for chips or cookies. To her utter horror, the only thing in the cupboard was raisin and oat cookies.

Her parents didn't even like raisin cookies, why the hell did they have those?!

Layla groaned, spinning on her heel and walking back out the door, heading down to the corner store.

While it was only 6pm, the sky was considerably darker than you would expect it to be in late June. The sun was overshadowed by a big, dark cloud, fucking fantastic. She sped up her walking slightly, hoping to make it to the store before the rain began. A deep rumble of thunder pushed her into walking even faster, keeping her gaze on the floor to check if a single drop of rain had hit yet.

It seemed the world was really not on her side that day, because just moments after she turned off her street, she smacked right into someone. How absolutely pathetic.

"Sorry!" The brown eyed girl winced, looking down at the person she had just knocked to the floor.

At the realization of who it was, her cheek flushed bright pink.

That pretty girl with green hair, who pandora had informed her was Peter Maximoff's sister. God, could her day get any worse?

Maximoff huffed a laugh, sitting up off the floor and brushing the dirt off her jeans, which Layla noticed looked about 3 sizes too big, and were held up by a shoe lace. "It's fine." She mumbled, picking her now empty can of coke back up.

For the second time that day, Layla felt guilty. It wasn't a feeling she enjoyed, especially when the reason she felt that guilty led back to the same person.

"Hey you're that girl who's like... frenemies with my brother." She said, her voice much more calm and quiet than Peters.

Frenemies?

"Uh." Layla looked dumbly at Maximoff for a few moments. "Yeah."

The green haired girl just nodded at that response, not saying anything else and started walking again, leaving Layla stood in the middle of the street looking like an absolute weirdo.
