"So he's on his way right now," Miles said awkwardly after getting off of the phone.

I looked up at him from my spot where I was sitting on the edge of the pavement.
"Why are you doing this," I can't help but ask, making subconscious eye contact, trying to scan his face through the shadows. I can't stop myself from being suspicious.
"Huh?" He asked, his eyes starting to lock onto mine.
"Why are you helping me? Why didn't you just make fun of me like your friends?"
"Oh well....like.... I don't think it's like... polite..?" He begins to stumble as I let out a stiffled laugh. I don't want to laugh at him, I never want to laugh with a guy, but how dilly he was, it was genuinely funny to me. He's just so clueless.
He starts to laugh with me as well before speaking again, "well obhviously it's not polite, that was just stupid, but like if I see a girl on the street climbing out of a dumpster my first instinct isn't really to make fun of her. It's just not the way I was raised. " he looks down, still smiling a bit. He begins to sit down on the road in front of me, clearly tired of standing.
"Damn," I say, raising my eyebrows a bit. Boys from where I am would never say something like that. This has got to be some other planet or something.
I laugh to myself but then think again.
Where actually am I?
I went through a literal portal and fell in a dumpster. Maybe I am on another planet? Or country at least..
I backtrack on why I'm even here in the first place, only to regret it immediately.
My stomach sinks as I remember my sisters lifeless body.

It hits me suddenly that I had completely forgotten about everything else..Tears start to bubble in my eyes. She's really dead. Why did I leave? I guess blocking out memories is a way of coping with trauma, but it had only happened a few hours ago. How had I blocked it out already? Is it because I'm talking to someone..? Is it cause I'm talking to Miles?

"What's your name?"

My head snaps up to look at Miles.

"W-what?"

"Umm...what's your name..? Sorry if that's like too personal, but you kind of look my age, but I haven't seen you around."

"Oh, that's because I'm...New..."

"Really?"

"Yeah...my names Y/n, I'm not -"

"Wait, so where are your parents right now? Why are you alone? Why were you in a dumpster? Like what happened?"

"Woah, slow down..." I breathe. I can't just spill my whole story to some guy I just met. That's ridiculous.

"Damn Y/n please just tell me," he looks into my eyes again as I physically can't stop myself from looking back straight into his. Even in the dark, I could tell he wasn't bad looking, cute even. Maybe if I was his age, I'd have a shot or something...

"I'm 14, turning 15 in like 4 months," I blurted out. My eyes widened at myself. What was that?! Am I really this desperate?! It's just a guy!

Although I look away embarrassed, I can feel his body language get happier as his eyes widen with excitement.
"Cool me too! I turn 15 in like 1 month or something," he smiled at me, and I couldn't help but feel myself melt a bit.

He seems really sweet.

I smile back at him, which makes him smile a bit harder.

Why is he kind of cute?

Suddenly, a beep sounds from a car as headlights flood the narrow alleyway.

"Miles, this better be important. Your mother made enchiladas!" A man yells from inside the car, making me jump.

"Come on, let's go, that's my dad," Miles got up from his place before grabbing my hand and leading me through the illuminated darkness.
