*Rebecca*
The next day I got up and got dressed for school. I took a long time getting ready, making sure I looked okay. I was going to hang out with Shawn today. I texted him early this morning because we both can leave early after finals. He always wants to go get ice cream, so we are going to Silver Star's Ice Cream Shop this afternoon. I paused in the mirror once more, looking myself over. Why was I so nervous? It's just Shawn. My best friend. My best friend, with his hair, and beautiful voice, and his deep brown eyes...what am I talking about? He's my friend. Nothing more. Just my friend. But, I thought as I fixed my hair, I might have the slightest crush on my best friend. I ran downstairs, smelling breakfast more as I got closer to the kitchen.
"Hey mom. I'm going to Silver Star's with Shawn after finals today. You know that's his favorite place to go after school."
She looked over at me from the eggs she was making. I walked over to her with a little smile on my face and helped her with the toast.
"Rebecca! That's the fourth time in two weeks you've gone with him. Is there something going on?"
"No! Of course not. We're just friends. Trust me."
She gave me a knowing look and went back to the eggs. I groaned and took the toast back to the table. My sister came down the stairs with my brother behind her, hurrying her down. Bethany was still in her pajamas, an oversized t-shirt and baggy shorts. Her light brown hair was a mess and she had on her fox slippers. Danny was already dressed, but his college had already gotten out for the summer. Bethany and I still had a week to go in school. I had finals all this week, but Friday was my last day and Saturday Shawn and I are throwing an End of the Year party at our houses. Bethany gets out of school this Friday too, but she's two years younger than me, she's going to be a junior. I'm going to Michigan State for college and so is Shawn. We planned it since we were kids, because both of our parent's went there too. Shaking out of my thoughts, I thanked my mom for breakfast and grabbed my backpack. As I was walking out of the door, I saw Shawn coming out of his house too. We waved across the yard and he walked over. He kind of looked overly happy and tired at the time. I suddenly was aware of what I was wearing. Who am I kidding, it's Shawn. I was just wearing shorts and a floral t-shirt. My hair was pulled back in a loose braid and I was wearing flip-flops. I looked fine. Then why am I so nervous?
He smiled. "Hey Becca, how's it going?"
"Really? You just texted me like an hour ago, and it's 7:00 in the morning. I'm tired."
He laughed and looked at me out of the corner of his eye as we started walking. I gave him a look as if to say Do I have something on my face? and he looked away. I started fumbling with the keychain on the strap of my bag, not saying anything. What could I say? We had never had any awkward silence before. I decided to bring up the party.
"So, are we ready for the party on Saturday?"
He nodded and looked at me again, but a different kind of look. Like he was trying to figure something out. I was getting annoyed.
"Why do you keep staring at me? Is there something on my face?"
He stopped walking because we were almost to the school. He shook his head.
"No, you look fine. I just..."
"What?"
"You know what, it doesn't matter. Let's just get to class. We're going to be late."
I was shocked. He had never not told me anything before. I walked away from him towards the school and heard footsteps behind me, but when he reached me, he didn't say anything. He just walked past me and kept on going. That act made me want to cry and slap him. He was never this mean, not even to the people he didn't like. Why was he acting like this?
*Shawn*
I walked off to class, leaving Rebecca behind. I wasn't mad at her, I was frustrated with not being able to tell her how I feel. She would never like me, I'm her best friend. As I neared my friends, Aaron glanced over at me, knowing something was wrong.
"Hey dude, what's going on with Rebecca? She looks angry and sad over there. Why'd you leave her standing there?"
I sighed. This was hard to explain.
"Can we go over there? This is kinda private."
"Sure."
We walked over to the benches and sat down. I sat with my elbows on my knees and my head in my hands.
"What's wrong dude?"
I blurted out, "I'm in love with Rebecca."
Aaron sat back on the bench and whistled.
"Dude, woah. Are you gonna tell her?"
"No, I can't. She would never like me. And after what just happened I don't know if we're even friends anymore."
Ooooooohhhhhh cliffhanger!!!! I'll update tomorrow I promise! Hope you like this chapter!
