Five Years Earlier

The dust had begun to settle on the empty bullet casings as the smoke of warfare swept into the distance. Water dripped down Judas' uniform, collecting grit and traces of blood as it coursed haphazardly from the canteen held up to her mouth down to the asphalt. After a satisfying swig she leaned against a nearby pickup truck. The sun was shining at a medium height and with a medium temperature, and the battle was medium won.

It had been hours of fighting, snaking and circling back and forth through various city blocks facing all manners of armed resistance. But once the police presence was gone, they had received orders to cease hostilities with the civilian vigilantes, but to attempt to detain any who continued to fight. Now the city had fallen quiet, and Judas' squad was enjoying their few minutes of respite before they inevitably mobilized again to prepare for whatever the US Army might be planning. Captain George was looking out at the residential neighbourhood they were in while the rest of the squad chatted and checked their gear. George's radio came to life.

"Captain George, come in."

"Here, over," George responded.

"It's Azeem here. Your squad is near the corner of Clark and Millpond, yeah?"

"Affirmative," said George. "We're a couple blocks out but not too far."

"Head over there now," Azeem said. "Apparently we have a case of Furry Madness."

"Fur—"

"I don't know," Azeem cut him off. "Some mother tried to kill her child or something. Humans. I didn't think we should bother but the general said that if we're going to control this city we have to take care of this city, and that includes everyone. The father—or, step-father, or something—I'm fuzzy on the details—he managed to stop her and has her tied up. He tried to flag down one of our squads but they had other orders so they called it in to General Dorothy and then she called it in to me and now I'm calling it in to you because I'm miles away with my squad."

"Okay," said George, taking in all the information. "Yeah, we can swing by."

"Thank you. The general said to bring the family to the nearest triage point. Should be the one on Millpond."

"On it," George said, motioning his squad in the direction of the scene. "Over."

"What was that about Furry Madness?" asked Judas as the squad geared back up.

"I don't know," George said with a shrug. "Let's go."

A few minutes after they set out, Human Ambassadors Candy and Combine were pulling up to the Millpond Street triage area. Dozens of wounded—both furry soldiers and human civilians—were being tended to by panicked furry military field doctors.

"Ambassador Candy," one of them said with a salute as the two approached. "Glad you're here. It's absolute chaos. We're running low on supplies."

"Okay," Candy said, suddenly taking off towards the central tent, prompting the others to follow. "I am no doctor but I will try to help coordinate. I believe we should move all of the critical patients to the east side and keep all the stable ones to the west. Unless you disagree; you have more experience than me. Combine, call the president or VP and see about rerouting any supply vehicles here."
