"Affirmative, Captain," I responded to Captain George. "They're all still there." I had followed Combine all the way across town. I had watched him go into Chet's and then to Chet's mechanic shop. I think he actually let a bird inside, but that's not impo—oh Great Mike, a BIRD followed him in! That must've—okay, uh, never mind. No spoilers for you. Anyway, then I had followed him and Candy back to the safehouse, where Mach had already returned.
Many, many hours had now passed.
"Copy. Good job staying on them. I'm trying to keep in touch with Big City Mouse, but she's caught up with a situation on the far side of town."
"Copy," I said. I was laying down on a rooftop across the street and a couple blocks down from the safehouse. The scope of my rifle was trained on the front door. The safety was on, though, since we weren't supposed to be engaging. It was a cool early morning and the first hints of sunglow were appearing on the eastern horizon.
There was a moment of silence. I think George was waiting for me to ask what was happening, but I wouldn't. I kept my eye to the scope and my lips sealed. George explained anyway. "Apparently General Ramona has set up camp in the old high school on the west side with a bunch of her soldiers from the Third and is resisting our presence. She's taking in refugees but not in Big City Mouse's name."
"Is she in touch with Mach, sir?" asked James, jumping into the conversation.
"Unknown," said George. "Big City Mouse is considering cutting her losses and leaving it be for now. General Ramona doesn't seem interested in the throne for herself, she just isn't acknowledging Big City Mouse's place on it."
"Why not?" I asked. "With President Harambe dead and no other officials present, the chain of command is clear. It's her duty to answer to Big City Mouse."
"I suppose she has a more generous definition of duty," George pointed out.
"Copy." I tried to bite my tongue, but I had to ask; "And... any word on General Dorothy?"
"Not yet."
I cursed under my breath and shifted my body, suddenly feeling how uncomfortable it was to be laying on this coarse roofing. Hopefully she was okay. "Copy." I settled once again and returned my eye to my scope. All I could do was wait for her to be located and join Big City Mouse's forces. She was a capable and wise leader. With her guidance, this fledgling rebellion wouldn't stand a chance.
"Let's just stay focused on the mission, everyone," George ordered. "Over."

"Everyone up!" Mach shouted, flicking off the radio and on the lights and then scrambling to fill up a backpack with supplies.
"What's happening?" Candy asked, emerging from the shadows already fully alert.
