"Kaz, enough!" You couldn't help but laugh, despite your protests.
"You know you love me," he replied, smirking. "And you know my joke was funny."
"You're Kaz Brekker," I replied. "I would've expected you to act like it."
"Y/N?"
You blink, pulled out of the memory. "Sorry, Inej, what were you saying?"
"I asked if you were going to come to the Crow Club today."
You smile. "Of course! I know you've been wanting to show me around."
As you walk with Inej down the streets of Ketterdam, you fall silent. You have been friends with Inej for a while now, and you had gotten to the point where silence was not uncomfortable.
"Have you ever met your soulmate?"
You blink in surprise, as you didn't expect the question. "Yeah, I have, actually. But I don't know who it is."
Inej looks at you in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"Before I met my soulmate, I saw the world in shades of brown. When I finally saw the world in full color, it was because I had met my soulmate, obviously. But the problem was that I had just met two brothers at the same time, and both of them had brown eyes," you explain.
"Ah." Inej went quiet for a moment. "Didn't one of them say something?"
"No," you reply. "I just assumed that he didn't know what it meant." You pause. "Have you met your soulmate?"
"No, not yet."
"That's a shame. Don't worry, though. I'm sure you will."
When you arrive at the Crow Club, you follow Inej inside. The first person you notice is a man standing at the bar. You could have sworn you met him before, because he looked just like Kaz Rietveld.
Inej nudged you, smiling teasingly. "That's Kaz Brekker. He's the boss here."
"Brekker?" Your smile faltered.
Inej's smile disappeared. "What's wrong?"
"Remember how I mentioned I met two boys at the same time and one of them is my soulmate?"
Inej nodded. "Yes, why?"
"He looks just like one of the boys." You swallow. "And that boy's name was Kaz Rietveld."
Kaz's POV
"He looks just like one of those boys."
Kaz had turned at the sound of Inej's voice. While he could tell she was there, he had not heard the conversation leading up to that statement. He locked eyes with the woman standing beside Inej.
"And that boy's name was Kaz Rietveld."
Kaz's breath catches in his throat.
As she walked towards him, he said, "Follow me."
Without checking to see if she was following, he turns and walks towards his office. He had recently created an office for himself in the Crow Club in the case of cheating or other issues.
"What are you doing here, Y/N?"
"I could ask the same of you, Kaz."
"Listen, I-" Kaz sighs, unable to find a place to start.
Y/N seems to pick up on that. "Alright, then. Where's Jordie? Can I talk to him?"
Reader's POV
"Kaz?"
"He's-" Kaz swallows hard.
"He's dead." Realization hits you hard as you realize that he was struggling to say. "I'm so sorry."
The silence lasted a few seconds, but it feels as though it drags on for years/
"So," Kaz starts, "we're soulmates."
"So it seems."
