We rushed home sneaking in, almost getting caught. Liv had the alarm on, so using the doors were out of the picture. Luckily the windows weren't that hard to reach. Our rooms were on the second floor, but there was a deck close to the edge of Lani's room window. She must've been thinking ahead and left it open.

We went up on the deck quietly trying not to make a sound. If one creak was made Liv would know. She was good that way, nobody snuck up on her. Well nobody besides us. We learned her tricks and moved around them.

Lani was the first to jump up for the ledge of her window, wiggling inside. She looked like a pro, like it was a daily activity. It was my turned and I wasn't so sure if I'd be able to do it.

I stepped up on the edge of the deck, arms high, ready to jump. If I slipped this would be bad. Trying not to think about it too much, I jumped as hard as could reaching the window.

Nalani was there holding on to my arms to pull me in. I put my foot on the side of the house to push myself up and there it was. A simple, but loud scratch, like a bull preparing itself to run.

Shiitake mushrooms!

"Dammit, Ren, now we're dead. Kick with your left not right, it's quieter there," she whispered.

I kicked a final time with all I had, crawling into the house, landing on the ground. Once I was in Nalani scrambled over to her closet throwing clothes at me.

"Put them on. Liv will be here in 30 seconds and she does not need to find us in these clothes. Plus we don't smell like our house," she said at barely a whisper.

I rushed slipping my dress off, putting on my gray sweats and red tee, in less than 20 seconds. Lani on the other hand finshed way before I did and started spraying air freshener around.

Liv came through the door, looking fully alarmed. It was as if she was ready for battle. She settled her eyes on us. I couldn't tell if she was pissed of confused.

"What's going on in here," she asked.

"Nothing," we said simultaneously. Now that didn't look good.

"Uh huh. And what exactly is nothing. You look like you've been up to nothing, but you're eyes are telling a different story," Liv said looking skeptical.

Nalani threw her hands up like she was surrendering. "Okay you caught us. I don't know why we didn't just admit to you in the first place. You know save us time and get straight to the 'don't do that again and go to bed'." She held her head up high giving her a you win look. "I wanted to practice doing Ren's hair. It got too hot in here, so I opened the window, but the screen popped out. Me trying to be thoughtful, didn't want to wake you for the alarm code. I jumped out, got it from the deck and jumped back in."

Liv looked like she didn't want to believe it, but she just nodded in understanding. I knew she wanted to say more. The look on her face said she was too tired to deal with it at the moment. Even if she did go on a rant right now, she'd probably forget about it in the morning.

"Just go to bed," she said leaving out.

I left out too, telling Lani I was tired. When in reality, I couldn't get this night out of my head. I wanted to know what was going on, but I didn't want to find out that way.

The way things were going spooked me. My parents would play the same trick on people. Out of nowhere they would become friends with their victims, then they would invite them over for dinner. When I was younger it seemed normal, it was just having a friend or two over.

They looked like caring, charming people. People used to say that's where I got my charm from. Now they've turned that against me, saying I'm just trying to lure them in for the kill. It's was why I don't make friends easily anymore.
