"How much further," I said trying to keep pressure on Efa's wound.
Cole was already speeding down the highway heading to the hospital. There was no time to waste since the knife could've dug inside something important. It was either minutes or an hour until she would die from it. And we needed to get to the hospital before that happens.
"It's about another 5 miles," he said, gripping tighter on the wheel.
I looked outside the window, looking at the cop cars chasing us. If I would've had my phone I would've called in, but no and we can't pause to explain right now.
Efa's eyes were heavy and looked like at any moment she'd give.
"Keep your eyes open for me."
She nodded gripping tighter onto my hand. "It hurts."
"I know, but we can't go to sleep just yet. We'll be at the hospital in a few. Can you stay awake until then." She nodded again, staring up at the ceiling. "Good."
And to think, I almost didn't agree to helping in the first place. Never did I think I'd be trying to save my little sister.
Cole swerved onto the parking lot by the front door. I quickly got Efa and ran inside. The color drained from her so quickly she was almost gray.
"We got something," one of the nurses yelled.
The nurses came over taking her away. Cole came in a minute later with the cops behind him.
"Excuse ma'am, you need to get that shoulder looked at," the nurse said pulling me towards a room.
I followed her reluctantly so she could stitch me up. I was in too much shock to even realize what she was doing to me until she was done.
I was only worried about Efa, if she was going to make it. Cole was out in the hall with the police. After a few minutes exhaustion took over and I went to sleep.
When I woke up, my shoulder was killing me. That knife went about three inches in and had to be an inch and a half wide.
"Aeron," Nalani whispered beside me.
I glanced over to her. She was sitting on the chair next to me wrapped up in a blanket.
"Hey."
She smiled, picking up her phone to take a picture of me. "Sorry, Liv wanted to know when you woke up. She'd be here, but she's knee deep in work right now with no breaks."
"It's fine," I said sitting up, looking around the room. They must've moved me when I was asleep.
"Manni is on her way though. Oh, Cole told me to tell you that, Efa is alive and well. You guys got her here in time."
I sighed in relief. Manni would be here and she can meet her other granddaughter. Maybe then she can care for her. I doubt Efa would be awake now, but I don't want to stay here.
"Where's her room?"
Nalani led me to her room. Inside everyone was sitting around her bed. The color returned to her and she looked normal, laughing at something Ryot said. All was well.
"Oh my gosh baby, what happened," Manni said from behind me.
I turned around to look at her. She wore a blue blouse with her bakery name embroidered on it. Warrior's Bite. Her wavy gray hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her brown eyes were filled with worry.
"I'm fine, really," I said holding onto her hand "It's Efa you should be worried about."
I walked her over to the bedside. Cole moved over so we could stand closer. Efa smiled at me and kept looking back and forth at us. Manni must've saw the resemblance and started laughing and crying.
