It's 1 in the morning and they still haven't found Iris and Aiden. I can see why Jess hates this game and why Iris chose him to find her.
Everyone else had went to sleep. I tried to go to sleep, but I just couldn't. My mind was just too awake to even sit still. Even the wolves were asleep.
Plus it didn't help eating ice cream. But hey I had to find someway to drown out my emotions. It probably wasn't the best way, but it felt pretty damn good. Chocolate ice cream, topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup and white chocolate chips.
"Looks like diabetes, in a bowel," Jess said in the doorway of my room.
"I like to eat my regrets, rather than feel them," I said digging my spoon in, stuffing my face.
He smiled a little, than stopped, like he was unsure if I was joking or not. He stood there for a little not saying anything.
My eyes started wondering around, whether to stare or just sit there awkwardly. He had on blue sweats and a loose white tee.
"Can I ask you something," he asked, sounding just like Ryot. Instead of just saying whatever was on his mind he waited.
"Hmm, I wonder where I've heard that line from," I said jokingly, setting my bowel down. "Ask away."
He took a deep breath, like he was lifting the world off his shoulders. "Is there something going on with you and Matt?"
His question really threw me off. We've only been cool with each other for one day. I didn't get how he could get to that conclusion so quick. Maybe because he hugged me, but no one ever tried to hug me before. Not even Jess. Hell not even Nalani.
"Did you find Iris yet," I asked switching the subject.
"Uh, yeah. She's on the trampoline asleep," he said looking away. "I'll just be going, now."
He started to turn away, but I didn't want to give him the wrong idea. I wouldn't want anything to be between Matt and I right now. Nalani likes him, but Nalani also likes someone new every other week.
"There's nothing going on between us," I said stopping him. " Today was the first day, he's been nice to me....Wait why is Iris on the trampoline?"
"She pissed me off," he said looking at the window. He turned back around coming into the room, sitting against the wall. "Why are you still up?"
"Oh you know, the sky's awake so I'm awake,"I said laughing a little bit. "But um, I like it when the world quiet. There's a bunch of people asleep missing the sound of the night."
"The sound of night," he said arching his brow.
I gestured to the open window. Outside you could hear the street lights buzzing, the crickets chirping and the winds howling. It sounded beautiful to me. During the day you can't hear it and don't really hear it until it's fully quiet.
"My dad had once told me, secrets are for when your mind lets it guard up. You'd have to be crazy to talk to someone after 12. That's the time for your mind to unwind. It's not for the wake," he said softly, looking out the window as if he was mesmerized by it.
"And that's why we dream at night."
"Yeah, but when I look at you, Im dreaming with my eyes open," he whispered.
I didn't know what to say to that. Compliments made me feel awkward, like I had to say something back. Me and affection, don't really walk hand and hand. It's been so long, I didn't know what to do anymore. Even back when I lived with Liv we hadn't been really affectionate to each other.
