A few months ago...

"I hate these fucking mixers." Kiara grumbled into her drink, rolling her eyes at a guy who was attempting to breakdance in the centre of the room to absolutely no audience.

"C'mon babe." Sophie, her 'flavour of the month' as Elvis unaffectionately dubbed her, "It could be fun if you stop being such a grinch."

Kiara bristled at that. One, she hated being called babe. Always had. She wasn't a sheep-pig. Two, she was not a grinch. Elvis would have understood, but he was holed up at home with an assignment he refused to be dragged away from. Sophie was fun, for the most part, but Kiara was growing tired of her very quickly.

She had come up with every excuse in the book to avoid this mixer but, short of death, Sophie would not hear it. 'We never do anything, Kiara. I'm bored.' She needed to find someone less high maintanence.

"Whatever." Kiara snorted, "I'm going to get another drink, do you want one?"

"Please, babe."

Kiara nodded, leaving her now empty cup on the table and moving towards the makeshift bar. Two vodka cranberries ordered, she moved back towards where she had left Sophie to see her standing and talking to none other than the current massive pain in Kiara's ass - Brent Williams. The asshole, aka Violet's boyfriend of six-ish months, was the bane of Kiara's existence. A shallow, annoying, crass individual who had about as much depth as a puddle. All he could talk about was parties, sex and sex at parties. It was mind numbing.

Violet constantly reprimanded her that he was 'Sooo much more than that, Ki! Just get to know him and you'll love him as much as I do.'

The thought of loving Brent Williams made her want to vomit.

Kiara approached them carefully, eyes widening as she watched Brent place his hand over Sophie's where it was on the table.

"What? A pretty girl like you here all alone?"

"Actually." Kiara slammed the drinks down on the table, glaring at Brent, "She's with me."

Brent's eyes widened comically as he looked between the pair, back and forth. Kiara watched him with a raised eyebrow, waiting for him to speak.

"I...I don't..."

"Busted." Sophie snorted, "Nice going, jackass."

In that moment, Kiara realised that she hated Brent Williams more than anyone else she had ever met, and nothing could ever change that.
