I walked in the warm sand and found a nice place to place my blanket down. I placed the blanket down and slipped my tote bag off my shoulder so I could take out my stuff. A miniature easel, a small canvas, some brushes, a cup, my paints and a glass plane.

I smiled to myself and sat on the side of my blanket, taking in what was going on around me. The empty beach, the sun rays warmly coating my face, the waves crashing against the shore, seagulls diving into the water and later coming right back up to take flight again.

Oh how I love the beach.

While I was savoring every moment of the beach I heard faint yelling in the distance. "Kaia! Kaia!" The yelling came closer and looked to the right side of me, seeing my sister, Summer running through the sand and towards me.

"Summer! I thought you were staying inside of the house? Changed your mind–?" I asked her as she came closer, nearing the edge of my blanket.

She shrugged and sat down on my blanket with me. Summer was my sister. Really we were only half-sisters but I always ignored that fact and treated her like she was 100% my sister. She looked a little different than me as she was mixed, she had looser curls compared to my 4c hair that was always either in braids or let out to be in an afro. Her skin was a couple shades lighter than mine complemented by her lighter brown eyes.

Our mother got divorced from my father and married my step-father, also her father. This all happened only months after I was born, so Summer and I are only 11 months apart. From then on we were inseparable.

We were raised in coastal California, leaving occasionally for vacations to places like France, Korea, The UK, etc.

Our family has always had money. My great-great-great-great something  founded a bread company. It got rich and it's still a big corporation now. Since then we've had money, being one of the most common bread and pastry brands in the world. In every grocery store you're bound to see at least 100 products with the logo DS on it.

Summer snapped me out of my inner monologue and spoke. "What are you gonna paint today? What are you feeling today?" Her question made me chuckle a bit. Ever since she took psychology last year she's been so intellectual.

"I don't know. I'm feeling.." I took a moment to search for the word. "Cool, calm and collected." That's three words, damnit.

She giggled at my response, "So, calm?"

"Yeah, maybe I'll paint the shore." I say picking up my paintbrush and swirling it around in the air, as if it's a magic wand and a painting will appear. I pick up the plastic cup and hand it to Summer. "Can you put some water in this for me?" She nodded and accepted it from my hand, walking towards the ocean to go and get me some.

I looked at the collection of paints I had and decided on which color to use.

Maybe a teal? I'll experiment with colors today and see how it goes. I thought to myself.

Summer soon came back with my cup full of water and sat down next to me. "Thanks." A soft smile played on her lips. "Talk to me Summer, what are you thinking about the upcoming school year?" I said as I squeezed some paint out onto the glass plate. "I don't know. I really hope that the swim team can do better this year. I hope I myself can do better this year." I don't know how much better she wants to be, there's always room for improvement but she's the best on the whole team.

That isn't a claim either, it's a fact. Her times say so.

"Well improving is always good, I'm mainly looking forward to seeing the girls again." A smile played across my lips. "Me too, I really do miss them. They're like the only reason I actually enjoy school." She said while resting her head on my lap.
