Sam Keller had had some defining moments in his life — his mother's death, hearing his father had a girlfriend, traveling across the causeway for the first time, holding his new camera on one of his worst Christmases ever, telling his dad he would move to Maine, and his and Rory's first kiss. More moments with Rory should have been on the list, but the kiss started it. Then came falling in love and becoming part of each other's lives and families. Sometimes it was hard to tell where he ended and Rory began. They were one, except when Sam woke earlier on the beautiful August day, he knew he would experience another defining moment. It was their last day together for two months.

Rory was quiet as they walked down the beach. It was too warm for summer to end, but only their summer together was over. The season would continue for a few more weeks. Sam wished she wasn't going away, but he would never hold her back. It was two months until his long weekend in October, and another two months until Christmas break, then she would go back for four more months. Four semesters before she would come home to stay. Meanwhile, he would be busy in Boston finally finishing his own degree.

He tugged her hand toward the dunes. "Let's sit."

Rory let out a long sigh. He didn't want to think about how everything was their last for the summer until she came home. The night before they had spent the evening alone at her grandparent's condo. John and Kelly had gone to Bar Harbor to see friends who were visiting from Boston. Sam should have felt guilty, but they needed a special evening alone before she left.

He had tried to memorize every inch of her body the way she felt inside and out. He reminded himself they were young and had years ahead of them. If he hadn't switched his major and had a real job, he might have proposed before she left. It was not a secret to anyone that marriage was in their future.

The sand felt warm through the seat of his shorts. As he put his arm around Rory and pulled her in, the tears glistened on her cheek. Nostalgia filled his heart with memories of when they became friends and tears were a part of their early relationship — tears for their mothers.

Sam's voice sounded stronger than he felt. "It's okay. We can talk every day and..."

She shook her head. She spoke so quickly his brain took a moment to catch up to her words. "No, I think we should take a break."

"A what? No! Why?" He felt burning behind his eyeballs.

"Two years is a long time."

He dropped his arm and turned to face her. "It's fifteen weeks. Less really with visits."

Rory's jaw was set. "No high school relationship ever makes it. Lana got divorced and..."

"You're not Lana! Was this her idea or Maddie's?"

She shook her head. "No. It's mine. We have never even kissed anyone else."

"I have." He didn't know why he said it
