I check my phone. Midnight.
"So, one in the morning he'll be back?"
I hope he's right.
I couldn't tell if he disliked me when he found out who I was.
I decided to stay in this ally, by the way. I don't want to be seen. I put my hood and mask back on.
"Aye, I thought you'd be gone. C'mon. I'm takin' you to da crib. Meet the band, yeh?"
I almost jumped. I didn't hear him come down from the roof behind me.
I relax. "Oh, okay. Did you see the bike?"
"Yeh, we jus got some questions for ya, so I'm not bein' funny, but I haven't got all nite, let's go," he jumps down from the wall he clung to.
"Alright, alright, don't piss your pants!" I meet him and wrap my arms around his neck for the ride.
I'm set down and disoriented. When I collect myself I see no house.
"So, dis is da Spider-Base, we got da whole crew here, wassup," he pops his chin at the band.
One of them has my bike.
"Don't touch nothin', don't want muck on your pedicure," his hands in the pockets of his jean jacket as I follow him into the... hut. "Have a seat, we've got some words for ya,"
"You don't seem worried about my being here," I noted.
"Why should I be?" He's pouring water into a glass.
"My dad, you know how—,"
"Ignorant," he scoffed.
"Yes..."
"Have a sip," he hands me the glass, then leans against the wall.
"I'm nothing like him. I swear. I think you guys are going to change this place more than he is. He's overprotective, I can't do anything. That's why he can't know I was out tonight,"
"What can he do t'you? You're a rich girl, a slap on the wrist won't hurt, yeh? You worry too much."
"I'm not worried about that. He'd find out what I'm doing and increase security. And I wouldn't be able to... do stuff." I shake my head and have a sip.
"Like help the poor?"
I look up at him. How'd he know that?
"Yeh, I heard of yeh, you got a big rep. Why d'you do it?"
"Everyone deserves comfortability. That's like asking why you're a hero."
"I'm not a hero—."
"I don't help the poor," I countered. "Don't be modest," I chuckle.
He relaxes a bit. "I don't believe in dat stuff. It's got goofy connotations, innit?"
"Yeah,"
Someone comes into the room.
"Aye," he introduces me to her. I stand to greet Riotheart.
"Nice to meet you, I'm just here for my bike,"
"We've got questions for you, girl. You'll be off the hook in a sec." She pats my shoulder.
I look to the punk.
He nods.
I smile, hesitantly.
Captain Anarchy comes in next, "any news?" He asks.
"We're just about to ask," Riotheart.
"I don't have any government secrets you know? I can't imagine what you'd have to ask me," I set down the glass.
"Do you want to join the band?" They ask in unison.
Wow.
"I don't play. Anything." I feel warm. Nervous.
"We're not just musical talent. We're rebels. And so are you. D'ya know what they call you out here?"
"They?" I ask.
"Us, unfortunate," he confirms, pushing off the wall to come closer.
"I don't know, I didn't even know I had a reputation if I'm honest."
"Rebbor," Cap says.
"Rebbor? What for?" I am trying to think how that makes any sense.
"It spells 'Robber' backwards," Riotheart says.
"Ah, that's very creative. Who came up with that?" I look to each of their face. Each a different style of punk.
"Doesn't mat'er, d'you accept, or are we sending you off?" Punk asks.
If I join...
This'll be the craziest experience ever.
I'll be able to dress freely like them, a way I've always wanted.
This could work! But it doesn't have to be this dangerous. I can still go home.
"Both actually. If I can get back home to my dad now he'll never know I was gone. I can still come out at night."
"Yeah!" Captain Anarchy clasps his hands together once.
"I'll help you home, I've got a few gadgets for you," Riotheart flicks her head to the door to signal me out.
"Easy peasy," Spider-punk shrugs.
I'm off.
