We stumbled backward through the portal and landed on the ground.
My heart is conflicted yet again.
"Wha' did you see?"
"Nothing," I lied, more focused on the fact that he's here.
Have I started to hallucinate? I don't think so. This feels too real. Too familiar. There aren't any slight differences in this universe. I'm home.
I hold onto his costumed hand as we pick ourselves back up from the ground.
"Talk to me bird," he sighs. I look up at him and he asks, "What's dat look?" and cocks his head to the side to see me better.
"Where have you been?" I ask instead.
"I told you I'd be ou' for a bit, yeh?"
"Hobie, I don't know what to say..."
"It no big deal, innit? What'r you doin' hoppin' 'round wiffout sayin nuffin? Dat's dangerous ya kno'?" And as more words come out of his mouth his breathing picks up as if he's watching a horror film. As if trying to convince himself that all was okay.
"Can we sit?" I ask.
We sit at the counter of his apartment's kitchen.
"I'm alrigh'," he sighs. "I'm jus' curious," but he looks full of fear, searching my eyes for answers.
Have I ever seen this expression on him? Yes... a few dozen times... right before he lost me. A few dozen times.
My eyes start to tear. Has he seen it all too?
And for a moment there's silence.
"Tell me," he encourages with worry.
"I've seen everything. Over and over."
He staggers out of his seat a bit, but knowing him, he plays it off as a casual thing. As if he simply rose from his seat.
"Hobie," I encourage.
"Why did I give 'ou dat?" He says mostly to himself. "I'm so sorry bird," he sighs.
"Please, stop," I don't need him sulking. But a part of me wishes he hadn't given me this opportunity.
"Are you alrigh'?" He comes back and grabs my arms.
"I don't know," I'm honest. "A lot at once, I guess."
"Wha' d' you wan'?" He asks me, genuinely.
At first, I think it's an odd question. What do I want?
I want to die.
I chuckle a small laugh out loud.
"What?" He asks, trying to hide his desperation with his typical cool, calm voice.
"If I said it out loud you'd be upset, I think," I finally look up at him. He starts to ready his mask. "What's the mask for?"
"I'm gettin' a ping from Ri," he shakes his head.
"Yeah? Gotta go?"
"Only an hour, bird. Do me a favor, yeh?"
"Sure," I sigh, feeling a little neglected, naturally, but his work is important and it'd be selfish for him to stay.
"Cry," he nods, before putting on his mask.
And as he says the word it brings me back to the many visions I have in my head now. Of me crying.
Then fear strikes me.
I can't cry.
I'll die.
Short chap cuz next one might be long ;;;)
