I'm dropping by to recommend two songs for the chapter.
And the second one:
Enjoy!
Penelope had yet to come to terms with what had just happened. She couldn't even take it in herself. She had stood up to Colin for the first time in so long, and she had done so without hesitation and with a confidence that she had lacked before. But none of this had obscured how attractive Colin had become. He was more mature, more of a man.
Had they both grown up so quickly that neither of them had noticed? Her heart shrank every time she remembered Colin's hand holding her arm to keep her from leaving, her breath hitched, and her legs faltered at the memory. But she couldn't let herself feel that.
As best she could, she returned to the dance floor in search of her sister, but it was the opposite. In the distance, the Queen was approaching, and what Penelope took as a simple gesture turned to terror when she realized she was heading in her direction.
The Queen was going towards her.
"Stand up straight, child," Lady Danbury suggested, coming up beside her.
Penelope shot a fleeting glance at the old woman and the Queen arrived where they stood.
"Lady Danbury, it is always an honour to have you in the palace, my dear friend," exclaimed Queen Charlotte.
"I cannot say anything but the same, your Majesty," replied Lady Danbury.
At that moment, the Queen's gaze fell on young Penelope. She felt that she was analyzing her, but out of fear, she did not dare to open her mouth until she was asked.
"Miss Featherington, what a surprise," she said with a suspicious look.
"It is quite an honour to be in the palace, Your Majesty," she replied, making a small bow similar to her debut before her. But she was not expecting what was going to happen next.
"Child, stand up." Penelope was surprised at the closeness with which the Queen addressed her.
"Your Majesty cannot deny to me that young Featherington looks ravishing tonight," Danbury said.
"I would be a fool not to admit it. And this society would be blind to disregard she," the Queen said.
Penelope began to feel a rather strange sensation in her. Perhaps because the Queen was standing in front of her, or perhaps because everyone who was there was not taking their eyes off them, or maybe because Colin, accompanied by Kate, was approaching. She couldn't ignore the nervousness it was making her feel.
"All its exquisite, it always is in fact," Penelope confessed, smiling a little nervously.
"Forgive if the young lady is a little nervous, but her entrance back into society has her a little giddy," Lady Danbury replied.
