Chapter 2

Nadia

I awoke to a constant soft beeping sound. I tried to open my eyes but the room was so bright, it was like staring into the sun. I groaned as I tried to toss and turned, I tried to push myself up but my arms felt heavy and weak they wouldn't even move. A soft warm hand covered my eyes and pushed my hair out of my face. "Dr. Martin, she's awake." A high-pitched voice called out. The room went back to that spinning feeling.

There was silence for a brief moment, then a much deeper and heavy-toned voice came. "Mrs. Losk take it easy you were in an accident, don't try to move your limbs all right?" I opened my mouth and tried to ask him where I was or who was holding my eyes, but nothing came out, just a wheeze. My throat was on fire. The beeping got faster, and faster.

A familiar voice was the next one I heard "Donny dim the light please." The warm hand slowly lifted and the room was much darker now. I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital. I couldn't see too much but I could see Vanessa and Donny. They both looked so much older. Vannessa's hair was back to red and Donny's was much lighter. Their faces were marked with horror.

The deep voice came again "Mrs. Losk if you can hear me please blink twice." I did as he asked. "Okay! That's great, He came into my line of vision, he was an older man with a gray beard and big circle glasses "You've been out for quite a while, Welcome back" He smiled. "Mrs. Linna, could you help her drink this?" He handed Vannessa a foam cup of water. She held it up to my mouth and let me drink. I turned my head to the table next to the bed. It had flowers on it, and cards but one of the letters caught my eye. It was signed by "Kianna D'Los." It was a red letter.

It would be days before I'm able to be released from the hospital, my days there consisted of tests, questions, and terrible hospital food. There would be days when they would have me walk, others would ask about my family. I could not wait to get home. I had learned that this was my second coma, I had woken up a year ago then got into another car crash. My thoughts ventured away from me. I dreamt of my fluffy bed, my books, maps and most importantly my laptop.

I had almost started to picture my whole house before Donny came into the room. "Hey, Nat, how ya feeling?" He sat down on the bed next to me. He had a loose pair of jeans and a white t on. Which was much different than what he wore when we were kids. Now that I was broken out of my daydreams, I began to wonder, where would I live? My old house was surely sold and Donny must be in college by now.

"Donny?"

"Yeah?" He sat his phone down on the bed face up and looked at me.

"Where do I live?" I pulled my legs to my chest. The words felt unfamiliar in my mouth. My whole life, I had a home, I had a family. Now that this much time had passed did I still have all of that?

He paused for a moment almost as if he'd forgotten that I had forgotten. "You live with me of course." He said picking up his phone and quickly typing on the screen. "We're heading out in twenty. I'll go pull the car around. I'll be the only car in the front, ok?" I nodded and he stood up and walked out without looking back. Without a goodbye, he left. I grabbed the cards and shoved them in the small bag that had been laying on the hospital's gray rolly counter since I woke up.

I had four letters that were on the table. One of them was from my best friends who might not even be my best friends anymore, written maybe four years ago. Another was from Vanessa telling me to get better; the letter from my brother and it was signed by another guy named Eli. I never knew an Eli. The last letter was the red one. I held the cherry red letter in my hands. It felt like it was almost full, there was a lump in the envelope. I turned the letter around to open it. On the slip of the opening was a red lipstick stain, my mother's color. I opened the envelope and a photo fell out. With that one thing became true, whoever sent this letter had my family. I stuffed the letter into my bag and held onto the photo as I hurried out of the hospital. The photo of my mother, father, and Jase only drove me to find them more.
