Dementor Defence 101

The snow was just beginning to thaw out and the teachers had all returned early to plan out their lessons and such. Y/N and Harry were attending their first lesson with lupin on banishing the dementors.

"Boys? There you are, you both came. Now, are you both sure about this? You know this is very advanced magic, well beyond the ordinary wizarding level." Lupin said as he welcomed the boys.

"We're sure." The two boys said in unison.

"Well, everything's prepared. Now the spell I going to try to teach you is called the Patronus Charm. Did either of you ever hear of it?" Lupin asked as he walked down the stairs towards them both. "Well, a Patronus is a kind of positive force, and for the wizard who can conjure one it works something like a shield with the dementor feeding on it rather than him. But in order for it to work, you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, a very happy memory, a very powerful memory. Can you both do this?"

The two boys nodded.

"Yes? Very well, close your eyes. Concentrate. Explore your pasts. Do you both have a memory? Allow it to fill you both up. Lose yourselves with in your memories. Then speak the incantation, Expecto Patronum."

"Expecto Patronum." The two boys said together.

"Very good. Now, Y/N you step aside. Harry you will go first. Wand at the ready." Lupin said, Harry drew his wand and Lupin opened a boggart chest. A dementor appeared.

"Expecto Patronum!" Harry cast but nothing happened as the dementor got closer to him. "Expecto...Expecto...Expect.."

Harry fainted to the floor and Y/N jumped in between Harry and the dementor, hoping to defend his brother. The boggart changed shape into the cloaked figure and the snake. The boy paused for a beat before dismissing the boggart with the Riddikulus spell.

A few minutes passed until Harry woke up. Y/N and Lupin helped Harry sit up before Lupin gave the boy some chocolate.

"Come on, deep breaths. It's all right. I didn't expect you to do it the first time. That would have been remarkable. Here, eat this, you'll feel better." Lupin said as Harry took the chocolate and Y/N stepped off into a corner for a moment to recover from seeing the boggart of the cloaked figure again.

"That was one nasty dementor."

"Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. That, was a boggart Harry. A boggart, the real thing would be worse. Much, much worse. As a matter of interest, what were you thinking? What memories did you both choose.

"The day I met Hermione at the zoo before Hogwarts." Y/N said as Lupin gave a smirk like he knew who Y/N was talking about.

"Good idea, something that stays with you and can't be replicated. Harry?"

"The first time I rode a broom." Harry said as Y/N turned to him.

"You mean when we chased Malfoy?" Y/N asked as Harry nodded with a smile. "Wow, I feel old."

"No, Harry, that's not good enough. Not nearly good enough." Lupin scolded. Harry paused for a moment before walking over to the spine candles and holding his finger over the flame of one.

"There's another. It's not happy, exactly. Well, it is. It's the happiest I've ever felt...but it's complicated." Harry explained.

"Is it strong?" Lupin asked. Harry turned to face Lupin and Y/N, he nodded to them both. "Let's give it a try. Do you feel ready?"

Harry looked determined as he readied his wand.

"Just do it." Harry said stoically.

The professor opened the chest and the Dementor flew out.

"Expecto Patronum!" Harry casted but nothing happened. "Expecto Patronum!"

A bright light appeared from Harry's wand forming a shield. The dementor couldn't get through as Y/N and Lupin looked on in wonder. Harry managed to repel the dementor boggart back into the chest, Lupin slammed the chest shut and Y/N pulled Harry in for a bear hug.

"Well done Harry." Y/N said as he patted Harry on the back.

"Well done Harry, well done! And just so you know, I think you would have given your father a run for his money. And that is saying something." Lupin congratulated.

"I was thinking of him...and Mum. Seeing their faces. They were talking to me. Just talking. That's the memory I chose. I don't even know if it's real, but it's the best I have." Harry said as he looked to Y/N. Y/N just smiled and looked at him.

"Well done." Y/N said as Harry smirked. Y/N checked the time.

"I think I've had enough...for one day." Harry said as Lupin nodded.

"I think that you both have. Well done Y/N, that was very brave of you...jumping in front of that dementor, very brave." Lupin said as Y/N nodded.

The two brothers went back to the Gryffindor common room and put on their muggle clothes and joined the quartet in going to visit Hagrid...
