One month later:
Lucy was still on leave; Tim returned two weeks after Makenzie was born. Tim tried to take over after he came home and showered so Lucy could sleep. Lucy didn't get much sleep with a one-month-old. Lucy tried to get up with her at night, so Tim could sleep because he was working. Lucy only had two weeks left before she had to go back to work. Tamara had been coming more and more, getting used to Makenzie and her routine. Tamara was going to take over the day shift with Makenzie when Lucy returned to work. Lucy was feeling more and more rested, thanks to Tamara. Lucy loved to play with Makenzie on the floor. Most days, Tim came into them, being asleep in the bed. Today was no different. Tim came in and took a quick shower. He always showered first because I didn't want to bring anything home to his family. Then, he picked up Makenzie, changed her diaper and gave her a bottle of breast milk, and put her to bed. By the time he got done with that, Lucy had got up and was looking for her baby. Tim calmed her down, and Lucy went and took a shower, and they went to bed.
Two weeks later:
Today was the day Lucy had to go back to work. The past week or so, she had been going out during the day, so Makenzie would get used to being without mommy during the day. Today she was nerve-wrack. Tim drove them to work, and they put on their uniforms and went to roll call. Grey, "Welcome back, Officer Chen! The night shift left no open cases this morning. Be on the lookout for the men on the board behind me as they escaped from jail last night. Other than that, does anyone have anything to ask or add?" Tim stood up, "I have a question, sir. Is it ok?" Grey, knowing what was about to happen, said, "Go for it." Tim walks over to Lucy, pulls a ring box out of his pocket, gets down on one knee, and says, "Lucy, I had no idea that first day I met you that we would end up here with our sweet little girl. I should have done this a long time ago. You are my soul mate. Lucy Chen, Will you marry me?" Lucy was crying and wasn't sure what to say. In her mind, they were married. They lived together, had a dog together, and just welcomed a baby girl. Lucy finally said, "Well, as far as I was concerned, we have been married for a long time, so we may as well make it official!" "Is that a yes?" Tim asks. "Of course! I love you, Tim!" The whole room stood up, clapped, cheered, and passed money around as to who had one the bets they had going. "Ok, ok. Calm down. Congratulations, you two, but we do have work today. The couple of the hour can ride together. Be safe out there."
The first shift back felt like she hadn't left. The only problem she had was that she couldn't see her baby, and she had to stop and pump every two hours. Tim had got her a cover-up and a pump that worked in the car. So, she was about to pump in-between calls. They had a cooler with them. Lucy was surprised to see Tamara and Makenzie when they stopped for lunch. Tim had called her when Lucy was in the bathroom and told her how much she missed their baby girl. Tim enjoyed seeing her too.
Lucy and Tim came home that night and showered before Tamara left. Lucy was happy to be home from her first day back. They were so tired they fell asleep on the couch. Tim woke up at about 2 am and took care of Makenzie, and Lucy got up and pumped, and then they went back to bed. "Good night, Lucy. I love you." "Good night, Tim. I love you, too."
