Mate? What on earth was a mate and why did Mina seem to know?
"I'm confused," Kennedy said pulling away from Lucian. "Are you British or something? We just met, I'd hardly say we are friends." No matter how much she'd take a few more of his kisses without complaint.
"No love, you misunderstand. Do you believe in soul mates?" Lucian questioned.
"Absolutely not. I think there are people you can get along with for extended periods of your life, but nobody is a perfect match for you. I mean, let's say I'm always a positive person, okay? Something devastating happens and suddenly I'm hard and cynical... there can't be a person out there who loves both personalities. You try to be as happy as you can be with someone, but true love was a gimmick for businesses to make money selling diamonds, impressive clothes and flowers. It's a crock," she replied without hesitation.
Yikes. This was going to be a lot harder than Lucian thought. But she was so wrong about soul mates. Of course they existed, and their love was unconditional, never ending. He would just have to make her see.
"You're wrong," Mina interrupted. "Soul mates do exist and they don't just stop loving someone because they change. They love them regardless, even the flaws. They are two people specifically made for each other; no one compares to the love and passion they have for one another, Kenny."
"How do you know all of this, Specs? I mean come on, this is as nuts as werewolves," Kennedy protested.
Mina just shrugged her shoulders, unaffected and said, "I read a lot. It's not nuts if it's true. Lucian is your soul mate Kennedy. Be happy you found him."
"So what, Mina? I'm just supposed to be happy after everything that's happened? What about Adam, huh? Am I just supposed to forget about him? He is the only one who will ever have my heart and you know that Mina damn it!" Kennedy shouted exasperated.
Mina was torn, she knew of Kennedy's heartache. She loved Adam with every fiber of her being too, would do anything for him. Turns out 'anything' wasn't enough. There was nothing anybody could do the night they lost Adam.
But she'd read the books, heard the stories of mates. If they were right Lucian needed her; not only on a physical level, or emotional even, but spiritual. He would be destroyed without his other half and so would she. She hadn't been able to help with Adam, but she would do anything to redeem herself now. Kennedy didn't realize it, but they would be together. Mina would accept no less.
"Don't be ridiculous Kennedy!" Mina exclaimed. "Nobody would ever be able to replace Adam in your heart, we know that, but the heart is a strange thing, love. There might be just enough room in there to love another. He doesn't want you to forget him, Kenny, just try to love again."
This was all far too much for Kennedy's heart to take. The pain in her chest felt as if it was so intense she wouldn't survive it. She fled from the room in tears, not able to take it anymore.
"Mina, I have to know; who is Adam?" Lucian asked as nicely as his wolf would allow. He was upset another male possessed Kennedy's heart.
It wasn't her story to tell, but it was a chance she was willing to make to help her friend.
"Adam Michael Kline was Kennedy's son. He died a year ago, only two years old."
That was the last thing Lucian expected to hear. He'd like to be able to say he was relieved she wasn't already spoken for by another man, but this was worse, so much worse. Both him and his wolf regretted their anger and assumptions. He imagined there was no worse pain than losing a child. As much as he wanted to ask questions, he knew they needed to come from Kennedy herself when she was ready. He would be there as a shoulder to cry on, to comfort in the meantime.
