Daisy's POV:

"What's up guys, today we're gonna be exploring one of the most haunted houses in England!" Kitty brought that dumb camera of hers today. She points it around at all of us, as if showing the 'audience'.

I roll my eyes. Hazel looks nervous. I lightly pinch her to reassure her but really she should already know ghosts aren't real. "Daisy! Ow!" She rubs her arm.

"baby" i whisper.

Before she can respond, something moves in the corner of my eye. I know it's nothing but just to tease them i act scared. "what was that?"

Hazel is sticking her tongue out at me, knowing what really happened.

Apparently nobody else noticed as Kitty is excitedly moving her camera, trying to capture something, beanie is wailing and Lavinia is glaring at the wall where I pointed.

Honestly, I might kick them out of the Detective Society. we need good detectives, not ones who are scared of their own shadows.

"Daisy!" Hazel punches my shoulder. "Don't."

I roll my eyes at her. "guys, it wasn't anything. i was just-being dramatic."

god, i can feel myself cringe at saying that.

the honourable daisy wells, dramatic?! but it's been said now.

at least hazel isn't annoyed at me anymore.

Kitty barely notices and grabs beanie's hand, pulling her along the corridor with protest.

"come on, beans! and everyone else follow, we've got a haunted house to explore!"

this is interesting, but at the same time extremely boring.

Hazel seems to be enjoying herself though. i guess i might stay so she can have a good time.

of course, it would be better if i was here so i won't leave for the time being, just to keep her happy.

We spend around 20 minutes walking around, Kitty recording, Beanie clinging to her like some sort of puppy and Lavinia rolling her eyes at both of them. Really, I think she's jealous of their relationship. I can see how everyone has someone special but her, but I wouldn't trade Hazel for anyone so I can see why it might be hard for her to find someone.

At last, we pause at the bottom of the stairs to eat. Hazel takes some sandwiches out of her bag and we eat them whilst chatting. Beanie still seems terrified at the thought of ghosts. Hazel is shaken, I can tell, but trying to hide it.

They're both babyish, in my opinion. Ghosts aren't real, everyone should know that, especially at our age.

Before I can tell them this, the stairs creak and a small chip of wood breaks off, the sound of it falling echoes in the silence.

It is broken by Beanie screaming, "GHOST! ITS A GHOST! ITS THE GHOST AND ITS COMING FOR US!" She slumps onto kitty, who instantly catches her and starts stroking her cheek.

"Shh.." she whispers, "it's ok, beans, there's not really a ghost."

God, imagine if Hazel did that. I would catch her of course, but it's not how a Detective Society member should act.

Which is why I'm lucky to have her as my best friend, and not Beanie.

Beanie has (finally) recovered, eating digestives and sitting on the floor. Kitty is huddled up close, whispering in her ear. They both giggle and Lavinia gives them a look.

She makes a face. "Guys, this is boring! Let's play a game." A grin appears on her face. "What about...hide and seek?"

"Sounds fun." I say, bored. It would be better than sitting around waiting for beanie.

Hazel reluctantly says, "I guess, if you guys are." I grab her hand to reassure her, though really she shouldn't need any reassurance.

We persuade kitty and beanie to join, and soon me and Hazel are rushing upstairs, Lavinia counting to sixty.

"Come on!" I hiss. "In here!"

We duck into something that looks like an airing cupboard, the door barely on. Luckily it just about fits us.

"Ready or not, here I come!" Lavinia shouts up the stairs. Well, no turning back now.

It's really cramped, and there's barely enough room for one person. The tiny space between us fills me with a fizzy feeling, heat travelling up my neck.

It's a good thing it's dark, or Hazel would see the blush that set into my cheeks. Out hands brush and I hold my breathe.

"It's..cosy" Hazel whispers.

"It is."

Her hands are really warm, touching mine.

It's dizzying in the best way possible knowing that if either of us just leaned in even two inches there would be no space left between us at all.

Suddenly, something on Hazels side makes a noise. She squeaks and jumps away from it, now almost on top of me.

There's a look in her eyes, the way she looks at me in the crack of light from outside. Then it's gone and she steps back, clearing her throat.

"Sorry about that."

What I really want to say is how I wish she never pulled away. That we were still hot and pressed together against the wall of this cupboard, only our breathing to be heard.

No. Stop that. I can't think things like that, it's not..right. And she's my best friend, why would I want to ruin that?

Of course, what really comes out is "its- it's fine." It's really not becoming of me, stuttering like that.

Saved by the bell from this moment, Lavinia triumphantly opens the door. "Hah! Found you."

A/N are you proud of me bc I never write chapters this long my attention span gets the better of me and I just publish it also sorry again I had a shitload of assignments again but hopefully they've been cleared for now.

N:B I love this concept of Daisy having such a crush on Hazel but not being able to admit it and feeling silly for thinking it.
