BACK WHERE THEY WERE

A WEEK HAD PASSED SINCE THE NIGHT LILLY HAD DINNER WITH THE CURTIS BROTHERS. she hadn't called her boyfriend or talked to him, mainly because he hadn't bothered to call her. he wasn't in school which made it even more difficult for lilly to reach out to him, and when the day she appeared in court for him, he acted as if he never knew her.

lilly feared this would happen but she didn't know what to do. debra advised her to just break up with him but lilly couldn't do that after hearing that johnny was sent to the juvenile detention center for a year while ponyboy was dismissed as innocent. only lilly knew how much stress ponyboy was already under after hearing about his friend going away.

and though she wanted to leave him alone, she couldn't get him off of her mind.

she was sitting alone on a park bench just thinking about him. lilly couldn't focus on her homework and ended up dropping her binder. she went over to pick it up until a hand reached out, grabbing the binder before her.

lilly stood up to confront the person only to see ponyboy standing in front of her.

"you." she states, glaring at him.

"me!" ponyboy innocently exclaims.

lilly snatched the binder from his hands, going over to the bench to retrieve the rest of her stuff.

"lil, i get that you're mad and i understand-"

"of course i'm mad, you ghosted me after just one dinner! and the fact that i even saw you in court a few days later, you just made me feel like i didn't even exist to you." lilly recalls, "i'm your girlfriend, why are you doing this to me?"

ponyboy looked into her eyes, feeling empathy for her.

"is it because your friends think i'm not right for you?" she questioned.

"no lil, of course not." ponyboy lied.

lilly scoffed, "you're lying. i know it is because i heard them. your walls are not that thin, curtis. i heard your friends and what they thought about me, and i get it. i'm a soc and i shouldn't even be talking to you."

ponyboy tries to speak but lilly has already walked away, he still attempts to follow her.

"okay they maybe the reason but they won't change the way i love you." ponyboy says.

lilly turns around in disbelief, "if they can't change the way you love me then why did you not talk to me for a week?"

he was dumbfounded for a moment and could only look at her.

"i still love you now."

lilly looked at her surroundings to realize they were still in a public space. she grabbed ponyboy's hand but the rage in her never left. needless to say, she led him to the alleyway where no one could see them.

she breathes quietly, her chest slowly rising up then down.

"lilly, i love you." ponyboy repeats.

"do you really?" lilly scoffed, "ponyboy, you don't just walk away from someone you love just because your friends' opinions weren't positive. i got shit for being with you but i didn't care, i actually love you and i'm not the one to walk away."

"i know and i don't care what they think, i do want to be with you." ponyboy tells her as he picks up her hands.

"i don't know what it will take to convince you that i actually love you but i'll try everyday until you love me back."

lilly looked into his eyes for a short moment.

"lil, say something."

her eyes welled up with tears, streaming down her face and giving her a little salty taste.

"pony, i love you too."

ponyboy smiled as he pressed his lips against hers, lilly kissed back.

she knew he'd come back to her.
