Lilliana, or Lils, as Luke liked to call her, used to be the best of friends since they were five. Lily spent more time with the Hughes' than her own family, honestly. And everyone knew her and Luke would end up together. But the summer after high school, the Cruel Summer, as Lilliana likes to call it, things went downhill.
The pair had been in a relationship - a secret one. That had been the problem for Lily. After sneaking around that summer, Lily couldn't take it anymore. She asked Luke to make it known they were dating, at least to their family, but he refused over and over. He didn't want their relationship to ruin the relationship she had with his family.
But keeping it a secret only destroyed them in the end. Luke and Lily both went off to college, both at the University of Michigan. Lily thought about transferring, but it's a big college. What's the chance of her running into him? Well, it's more likely than she thought.
They are both in the same friend group, but still manage to hate each other after that Cruel Summer.
