[ Atlesian Tundra / 2300 / Vladimir's flashback ]

I woke up in the dead of night in a tundra, nothing new, except these monsters could be roaming anywhere. I searched for a road to take me to the nearest settlement. And there was one trail that could probably lead me to safety, as I was following the trail a horse was following me like it had lost its owner, the saddle was there and everything on it. I came closer to see if the person's initials were on the saddle. To my surprise, my Cyrillic initials were carved on the saddle, I hopped on the saddle and rode to a city called Mantle. It was well-guarded everywhere so I had to find another way in.

There were trucks marked with 'SDC' on them that enter and leave the city daily, I planned to get in the back of the truck to enter the city. Now, if was caught I'd be in knee-deep shit, no one knows who I man, I don't have any documents and they don't have me in any kind of database, but it was worth a shot. When the next truck was entering the city I tried to stop by using by horse to block the road, it worked and I tried to enter the back but it was locked, so I went under the truck and held onto it for dear life.

When I entered the city and managed to hop off the truck it was like living in the communist workers' area of a city. Like I've seen miners, construction workers, and so on. And there were thieves and pickpockets nesting around the city, and the military did absolutely nothing about it. So I did what had to be done, I became a vigilante and reprimanded some criminals. The people loved me even though they didn't know who I was until someone decided to rat me out.

A friend of a thief gave the authorities my description and the alleyways were no longer safe for me. The word of my appearance made it all across Atlas so I ran out of that city and looked for an abandoned town or house. While I was blindly following a road, an SDC truck stopped me and guards exited to apprehend me. They said that the head of the SDC would like to meet me.

[Timeskip]

They took me to the Schnee Manor to meet their boss who was waiting outside for them.

???: I see you've managed to get him.

Guard 1: We sure did, sir.

???: I'll make sure to reward you. Now, do you know who I am?

Vlad: Their boss I presume. Other than that, not a clue.

He frowned a little after hearing me say that.

Jacque: Well, I'm the CEO of the world's biggest dust-mining company - Jacque Schnee.

Vlad: Doesn't ring a bell. But what do you need me for?

Jacque: Right. I heard you were an expert in swordsmanship. Is that right?

Vlad: Yes?

Jacque: And you're the vigilante from Mantle?

Vlad: Yes, that would be I.

Jacque: So you're combat capable?

Vlad: Very much so.

Jacque: So my daughter is going to a huntsmen academy and I want to see if she's really ready. So do you mind training her in sword combat?

I put my hand on my chin and thought about it.

Vlad: No, I'm good.

Jacque: Please, it'll be short.

Vlad: I said I'm good.

Jacque: I'll pay you handsomely.

Vlad: Add some alcohol and you have yourself a deal.

Jacque: You got it.

I shook hands with him and Jacque invited me to teach his daughter.

Jacque: I haven't got your name yet.

Vlad: It's Vladimir, but you can call me Vlad.

Jacque: Alright, Vlad, you can wait here while I get her down.

Jacque went up to get his daughter while I sat on a staircase and waited. The interior of the manor was rather bland, hell the brutalist style can rival it.

Jacque: I know that there are only 2 months until you go, but we have to be sure!

I guess that's him and his daughter, I get up and look at him.

Jacque: Well, Vladimir, this is my daughter Weiss. Weiss this is Vladimir your instructor.

Vlad: Pleasure to meet you miss.

Weiss: Nice to meet you too...Can we get over this quickly?

Jacque: Weiss.

Vlad: No worries. This will be over in 15 minutes. Just get your sword.

She went to retrieve her sword of choice, I took off my cloak and unsheathed my shashka to see if it is sharp. The girl returned with her rapier and stood on the opposite side of the room from me.

Vlad: Ready?

Weiss: Ready.

Vlad: En garde.

She took a stance and I took mine, slowly we got closer and closer until the clashes began. She was trying to slash at me while I countered each move until I disarmed her and pointed the tip of my sword mere inches from her throat.

Vlad: Alright-*picks the rapier up*-the rapier is designed to stab deep with ease. Keep that in mind, although slashing and cutting is also good but stabbing is better. You're free now.

Weiss: Thank you.

She left in a hurry while I spoke with Jacque.

Vlad: Whoever trained her before did a really good job, but I don't think that it is enough. She's ready but any slightest blunder and you can kiss her goodbye.

Jacque: Hng...well okay then. Would mind coming here to train her a little bit more?

Vlad: As long as I get paid, I'd be happy to help.

Jacque: You got it. Where can I find you?

Vlad: At any type of bar or casino.

Jacque: don't you got a scroll number?

Vlad: No.

[End of flashback]

Vlad: In short - a CEO hired me to protect his daughter.

Velimir: You must be such a sad old man...

Vlad: Indeed, and a rich one at that. Any word from the other two?

Velimir: Nope. But they'll be fine.

They sat on a bench smoking and having a friendly banter, and they spoke until morning and the initiation.
