AaronMy Sunday off work started like no other. I made breakfast for me and Jack, pancakes with chocolate chip his favorite. We then watched some cartoons before dropping him of at Haley's. Went for a run. Had lunch. Did some paperwork. Went out for dinner. Alone, and then came home.
I walk into the apartment complex stairwell ready to just get home and have a glass of whiskey. Moments before I reach my door I hear giggling and footsteps from my floor.
Shit.
I already knew who was up there and I've actually had a pretty good day today and it was about to get ruined in about 3. 2. 1.
I cleared my throat as I stalked towards my door that had a my next door neighbor and her probably fifth guy this past two week leaning against it. Making out. Talk about crossing boundaries.
I cleared my throat again. "Excuse me" I growled.
She peered up at me. Hazel eyes. Ginger hair. Freckled flushed cheeks and very, very plumped lips.
"Whoops, sorry mate" The new guy said before they peeled themselves of my door and headed towards hers and went through it.
She just moved in next door about three weeks ago while I was away on a case and almost every time I've gotten home from a case late in the evening or when we've had a paperwork day she's been plastered against the wall with a new guy almost every time. Talk about timing.
I let out a frustrated groan as I turned the keys in my door and went through it and locking it behind me. Throwing me keys on the counter then taking of my jacket. It was that time of year when the days were getting longer and warmer but the evening where still somewhat cold. I poured myself a glass of whiskey and downed it I one go before pouring another and swirling it around a bit in the glass before bringing it to my mouth to take a sip.
I hated to admit it but the nights without Jack and Haley were still getting to me. The divorce had today been finalized for three months but I've been living here on my own for five.
When Haley first had mentioned that she might have wanted a divorce I honestly thought it was a joke. But then I realized one day I was so busy with work and when I was actually home my focus was almost always on Jack. I mean, Haley and I slept in the same bed, had sex but we barely talked to each. Then one day I decided to do the one thing I promised her I would never do. I profiled her, and our relationship. It made see, clear as day. She'd been cheating on me.
So I did what any reasonable person would I confronted her. I was hoping I would've been wrong, that my profile would have been false. But the profile almost never lies.
So I told her to stay in the house with Jack since she was home more and that I would get an apartment.
I downed the last of my whiskey enjoying the burning sensation as it went down my throat and then got ready for sleep.
~
Per usual I'm the first one to enter the bullpen I'm the morning. So I put on some coffee in the break room before bringing a cup up to my office and closing the door behind me.
A firm but still light knock sounded on my door. A knock I very much recognized.
"Come in" I spoke.
The door opened as Erin Strauss, the section chief walked through the doorway.
"Good morning Aaron" She said with a serious expression. Erin and I had worked together for many years so when we weren't with other colleagues we kept to a first name basis.
