THREE DAYS LATER, Serenity sat on the bench in the empty gymnasium, her eyes focused on the polished wooden floor beneath her sneakers. The familiar sound of a bouncing basketball echoed throughout the space that she usually found soothing. But today, her mind was elsewhere. Her thoughts were consumed by the weight of her past.
Her coach, Thompson, paced back and forth, frustration evident in his voice.
Coach Thompson, a tall, stern-looking man with graying hair, walked towards her with purpose. His face wore a combination of concern and disappointment, a clear sign that he had something important to say.
Serenity braced herself for what she knew was coming-a lecture.
"Serenity, we need to talk," Coach Thompson called, his voice firm but not unkind. "You've got talent, kid. Talent that could take you places, but you're wasting it."
