Izuku Midoriya sits on the couch in his home, knees bouncing in nervous excitement as he clenches the un-open letter in his hands.
"Honey, do you want anything to drink?" Midoriya's mother, Inko, calls from the kitchen, though the distance isn't far. Their two bedroom apartment is relatively small, where the kitchen is adjoined with the living room and nothing separates the two rooms besides the obvious appliances and furniture.
"No thanks, mom!" Midoriya answers, wide eyes blank as they stare at the coffee table in front of him. He's so lost in thought he doesn't hear his mother walk up behind him.
"Izuku-"
"Ah!" Midoriya jumps in his seat, spinning halfway to look at his mother while breathing heavily, trying to catch his breath.
"Sweetheart, you need to calm down, I'm sure you got in." She gives a warm and encouraging smile, prompting Midoriya to return it with his own. She's in her scrubs for work with an apron over top so nothing gets on it. Her green eyes sparkle like Midoriya's, though her face lacks the freckles that spread across her son's cheeks.
"I-I don't know, mom. This is one of the top schools in the country. What if they don't think my grades were good or my scores on the exams were high enough or if I'd even have enough money to get in? T-There's just so much that could give them c-cause to say no." He hangs his head, tears welling up on the sides, threatening to fall.
"Oh my dear," She rounds the couch to sit next to him and struggles to wrap her small arm around his broad shoulders. With a sad chuckle, Midoriya helps her out by slouching more, causing Inko to nudge herself even closer to her son. "I told you not to worry about the money, we would figure it out. But I'm positive you got in! You're such a bright and smart boy!"
Midoriya's cheeks flush slightly. "Mom, you have to say that." He sniffles and looks up at her, a wobbly smile playing on his lips.
"Well, it's still true." She plants a kiss on his cheek before standing again. "Is Katsuki on his way here?" Inko heads back to the kitchen and Midoriya hears her start rummaging the shelves.
"Yeah," He fishes out his cracked cell phone, rereading the text from his best friend that stated, Fuck off Deku, I'm on my way. "He should be here any minute."
The two lived in the same complex afterall.
The apartment fills with the sounds of sizzling food and pots being moved to and from the stove top as Inko prepares dinner. Midoriya is close to losing his shit when he hears the front door click open.
Katsuki Bakugou walks through the threshold with his head held high and his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket. His combat boots are loud against the hardwood floor before he takes them off and hangs his jacket. Bakugou crosses the room to the couch in a navy blue t-shirt, black skinny jeans and now white socks.
"Kacchan!" Midoriya jumps up from the couch with a grin, meeting his childhood friend halfway and hugging him around the neck with ease as Bakugou was a smidge shorter.
"Oi, get off me you damn nerd." Bakugou struggles to push at the other teens chest with a look of disgust. Midoriya does let go, but his smile doesn't falter. At one time, Bakugou wouldn't have an issue shoving the freckled male away, but now that they're the same height and build, the blonde has a little trouble, though he'd never admit that.
"Good evening, Katsuki." Inko greets their guest, making her way to the two as she wipes her hands on her apron. Bakugou's facial features soften at the sight of the smaller woman and his arms immediately open to hug Inko when she gets close enough.
"Hi Aunty," He mumbles, cheeks slightly red.
"Will your parents be joining us?" Inko releases the blonde boy, staring up at him.
"Nah," Bakugou stuffs his hands into the back pockets of his jeans. "They had dinner reservations already, sorry Aunty."
"Oh stop, no need to apologize!" She waves her hand in dismissal before turning and making her way back to the kitchen. "I made extra in case, so now we have left overs for the next couple days."
The conversation is left there, and now it's just Midoriya and Bakugou.
"D-Did you bring your letter?" Midoriya's nerves come back full force, hands wringing in between the two of them. The blonde rolls his eyes and goes back to his leather jacket.
"Yeah." He grumbles, pulling an envelope out of one of the pockets. When he returns, Midoriya notices the crinkles on the sides as if Bakugou had been holding the letter tightly. Midoriya decides not to bring it up.
Midoriya nods and leads them back to the couch where they sit beside each other. Midoriya picks his letter back up and holds it in front of him. The air is quiet and tense and neither teen makes a move to open.
Knowing each other their whole lives, Bakugou and Midoriya had been through a lot. The blonde used to bully the other through a majority of elementary school and middle school. Then, when they showed up to high school on the first day, Midoriya had hit his growth spurt and had obviously been to the gym as he was bulkier. Bakugou ignored the new Midoriya for a long time, thought he was too good for the improved nerd.
Midoriya, however, didn't like that. He wanted to be Kacchan's friend again. He got strong hoping to prove himself to his friend that he was no longer a Deku, they could be best friend's again. It wasn't until they were partnered for a dumb chemistry project that the two started getting to know each other. First, it was just about class work, of course. But it soon turned to Bakugou coming over and staying for dinner, joking with Inko and playing video games with Midoriya. When the project was turned in, nothing changed.
High school passed in a flash and now they sit side by side like usual, but this time, instead of video games or comics paired with taunting and jokes, the two are quiet and tense, holding their futures in their hands.
Bakugou is the first to speak up after releasing a long sigh.
"Ready, nerd?" Swallowing, Midoriya nods shakily. "Alright, on three. One."
"T-Two."
"Three." Bakugou whispers the last number and soon both teens are ripping open the letters, pulling out the paper.
Inko stands behind the couch with her hands clasped tightly in front of her mouth, mouthing "please, please, please".
"FUCK YEAH!" Bakugou yells, pumping a fist in the air, a reaction Inko was expecting, so it didn't startle her. Inko grins at the blonde, clapping her hands in excitement before stopping to stare wide-eyed at her son.
"Izuku?" Bakugou pauses his celebration at Inko's worried tone and looks over at his best friend.
Midoriya's gripping the paper tightly, eyes going across the page, back and forth, so quickly Bakugou and Inko were worried his eyes would fall out.
Then the tears fell, rushing down his cheeks like waterfalls. Midoriya slowly turns so he can see Bakugou in front of him and his mother on the side. Both stand there, staring at the freckled teen with wide, anticipating eyes.
"Well?" Bakugou insists, stepping closer with his hand out, ready to snatch the paper.
Midoriya sobs out a laugh. "I got in."
"You damn nerd!" Bakugou yells, ready to strangle Midoriya.
"Oh my baby!!" Inko yells, shoving Bakugou to the side so she can take her son into her arms. "Oh my gosh, I'm so proud of you! I told you! I knew you could do it!" She bounces on her feet, arms wrapped tightly around Midoriya's waist.
"I know, mom, I know." He wetly laughs, hugging his mom back, eyes crinkled shut in glee.
After more tears between the two, Inko finally releases her son so he can congratulate his best friend.
"Kacchan," He nods his head towards Bakugou. "Congratulations." He puts out a shaky hand for Bakugou to shake.
The blonde stares at it with a grimace then up at Midoriya's tear-stained face.
"Get over here, ya damn nerd." Bakugou smacks the hand away and takes Midoriya into his arms. Midoriya gasps before giggling and hugging his best friend back.
Everything was alright.
