-June 1943-

We just rolled up to the train stop. It's 3 in the afternoon, the weather is gloomy. All I can think about is getting to my girl. My wife. Still have to get used to that.

Evangeline Barnes.

The name makes me smile every time. My last name fits her perfectly. Hell she's just perfect.

As we all get off the train, we're instructed to wait in line for our orders. I have to stop myself from fidgeting as we stand at command. Ugh! I just want my baby girl.

"Barnes." My Commander hands me my papers. Once we're released, I open them. 107th Infantry Regiment. I'll ship off to New York then to the front lines in Germany. Eva definitely won't like this.

"Dismissed!" We all depart, headed to our respective homes. I have two days here. Which is not enough time. No amount ever is.

I hoist my bag over my shoulder as I walk down Main Street. Our house is about 15 minutes from the tracks so it doesn't take me too long to get there. I'm very excited. I miss her so much and she doesn't have a clue I'm coming home. Training has been hectic so we haven't been able to speak over the phone.

I quickly unlock the door, dropping my bag as I walk inside. "Baby!" I yell.

Nothing.

"Eva?" I call again, beginning to walk around the house. When I don't find her, I assume she's out doing errands. The grocery is close and so is the cinema. I head out the door, walking towards the main area of town.

As I walk passed an ally, I hear rustling and grunting. I look down, seeing Steve getting his ass handed to him. One day I'm going to kill him. I sigh and walk up to the asshole, tapping him on the shoulder. He throws a punch, which I dodge, and sock him in the face.

"What's with all this fighting? Don't you know there's a war going on?" I kick the man in his ass as he runs away.

"Sometimes I think you like getting hit." I pull Steve up.

"I had him on the ropes." I roll my eyes then pick up the paper that fell from his pocket.

"How many times is this? And you're from Paramus now? It's still illegal to lie on an enlistment form, and seriously, Jersey?" I scoff.

"Looks like you got your orders." Steve mumbles, a frown on his face.

"107th ships to England in two days." I slap his shoulder. "You know where my wife is?" I ask.

"Grocery." He points across the street. I look over, just as the beautiful blonde walks outside. I go to wave, then I see a man trying to get her attention. She's paying him no mind which results in him smacking her ass. Oh hell no. That ass is mine and only mine.

I begin crossing the street, half way across when she turns around and socks him in the face. I chuckle as he falls to the ground, knocked out. That's my girl. "Hey baby girl." I smile. She looks up, confused for a second, then she sees me. A huge smile forms on her face.
