"Hey, kid

"Hey, kid." I look up and see Stark. I got back to camp yesterday. Steve has been quiet, as have I. Neither of us know what to do or say. I've been thinking of going back home so I can take care of some things. I need to get everything out of his apartment and sell it, then get a gravestone for him next to our daughter.

"You know I'm older than you, right?" He chuckles as he sits down.

"I know." He pours himself a scotch and sips on it slowly. "I'm not going to ask how you're doing, it's a stupid question. I do want to ask if you'll come work for me." I give him a confused look.

"Why?"

"I like you. It'll pass the time and you're very smart. I know you don't want to stay here. Once this war is over, I'll be going back to New York. Come with me. Start over. In a few years, I'll get you a new identity." He explains.

"No. I'm keeping my name. I really don't care if people know about me." I state.

"Ok. But I still want you to come work for me."

"Can I think about it?" I ask.

"Of course. Whatever you need, let me know." I simply nod, stealing his drink and downing it. We sit in silence, drinking the scotch.

People walk in and out, everything business as usual, while I'm drowning inside. His ring and dog tags hang around my neck, his compass in my pocket.

I blame myself, in a way. I should have been there. I could have saved him... grabbed him before he hit the rocks. If he would've just let me come... I could have saved him. He would be here now, holding me tightly. I should've cherished our last moments before he left.

"Evie." Suddenly, the glass in my hand breaks, spilling the amber liquid. "Dammit, hold on." I huff in annoyance and shake the glass off my hand. Steve appears in front of me and that's when I realize it was him who called my name.

"I'll be fine." I state, taking the small shards out of my hand.

"At least let me clean it." He nearly begs. I sigh but nod, following him to the nurses station. I sit on one of the beds as he grabs stuff to clean my hand. Both of us are quiet as he cleans it.

"I'm going home. I need to take care of some things." I tell him.

"Let me come with you."

"No... I need to do this on my own. Plus I don't think Philips will let you leave." He sighs heavily. "I'll be ok, Steve. I promise." He sets the rubbing alcohol down and puts both hands on the side of my body.

"I'm so sorry, Evie." His voice breaks. I pull him into a hug, his arms immediately going around me.

"It's not your fault. I promise I will never blame you." I whisper. He sniffles and pulls back a few minutes later, kissing my forehead. "I'm glad I still have you." I admit. It's true. Steve has been my rock when James was at training. I don't think I would've gotten through anything without him.

"Me too. You're my rock, Evie." I crack a small smile, combing my fingers through his hair. "When will you be going?" He asks.

"This afternoon. It'll take me a while to fly back." I explain.

"And will you come back?"

"I don't think so. Stark offered me a job at his company so I'm thinking on taking his offer. It'll take my mind off things. But you better write me. And don't do anything stupid." He chuckles, his eyes falling down to my lips a few times.

"How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you." I can't help but laugh. Tears well up in my eyes and I quickly wipe my face. "Once this war is over, we're going out for drinks."

"Sounds good to me. Be good, ok?" He sighs heavily, looking like he wants to saying something else, but he doesn't.

"Let me know when you leave." I simply nod. He kisses my forehead again before walking off.

When I get back to James' tent, I start gathering our things. Most of his clothes are already packed away so I don't have much to get. It's enough for me to carry in a backpack. Once I have everything, I put the backpack on and walk out of the tent, going to find Stark and Peggy to say goodbye.

"Leaving me already, darlin?" Stark asks.

"I'm considering taking your offer so you'll be seeing me again." He chuckles and pulls me in for a hug.

"Be good. No killing people, got it?"

"I promise. I'll let you know my answer soon." I turn to hug Peggy. "Tell him how you feel. I'm pretty sure he feels the same."

"Ha well, we shall see. Have a safe trip." I give her a small smile before walking outside. Steve is standing by the front entrance of the base, an envelope in hand.

"What's this?" I ask.

"My will. Everything goes to you. There's also a key to my apartment, in case you need to sell it. I don't have much but it's yours if something were to happen to me." He admits.

"Steve... I-" He shakes his head, handing over the envelope. "Ok." I sigh heavily.

"I love you, Evie." He pulls me into a hug.

"I love you, too, Steve."
