Chapter 7

"What, done harassing me already?"

I jump in surprise, looking up from my locker to see Liz leaning against the one beside my own. I can't believe she's actually starting a conversation with me...

"You told me to leave you alone, didn't you? I'm surprised you're even talking to me right now," I state, standing up and closing my locker door.

"I..." she frowns, then sighs. "I guess I can't help but be curious. You come out of nowhere, talking to me, wanting to hang out. I tell you no, you keep trying, then you just say hi to me each day, then you just...stop. I can't help but want to know why. What made you talk to me in the first place? Why did it slowly stop? And why was I disappointed it stopped?"

I'm surprised by her words. Her curiosity and disappointment surprise me the most.

"I guess I just want a proper explanation," she says, crossing her arms.

"Um, I..." I trail off. How do you tell a girl you saw visions of her killing herself? How do you explain to a girl that you wanted to talk to her to make sure she was safe?

I scan her face, trying to find a logical answer. I can't tell her the truth.

"I have a friend crush on you," I blurt. She gives me a weird look.

"Excuse me...a friend crush?"

"You know...when you think someone is cool so you want to be their friend? A friend crush."

"You are so strange," she says, chuckling a little. I groan. A friend crush? That's the best I could come up with? I need to join an improv class or something, because I am horrible at making things up on the spot.

"C'mon now, don't you think I deserve at least the truth to why you've been bothering me?"

"I...I'm just trying to be friendly, Liz." Her brow raises and she looks at me expectantly, as if she knows there's more to the story. I rub my arm anxiously. "I see you around a lot, but you don't hang out with too many people, so I was just trying to be a friend." It's half true, really, just not the full story. I don't know if I can ever tell her the full story.

"You mean with no one?" she corrects. It's true, though. She never hangs out with anyone, not that I've seen anyway. "Look, uh, Tony, right?" I nod silently. "I have nothing against you or being your friend, but I'd rather not get involved with anyone right now."

"I'm not trying to get involved with you," I mumble.

To my surprise, she laughs. "I don't blame you," she says simply. I furrow my brows. What's that supposed to mean?

"Don't say that," I mutter, arms crossed.

She rolls her eyes, crossing her arms. "Why not?"

"You can't be so hard on yourself. I understand that maybe you want to focus on other things, but you should give it a chance. You shouldn't force yourself to be lonely."

She looks away from me, not saying anything. I sigh.

"Look, I know I'm annoying you," I start and she rolls her eyes. "All I want is to hang out. Get to know you. Is that so wrong? I don't think so. So will you, please, just go bowling or to dinner or something with me? If it sucks, I'll leave you alone, okay?"

She sighs, pushing herself away from the locker. "Okay."

My eyebrows shoot up in surprise. I stare at her for a moment. "Really?"

"Yeah," she crosses her arms, looking up at me. "You're not going to leave me alone otherwise anyway."

I chuckle. "Yeah, that's true. Can I get your number then?"
