Chapter 15
"Hey."
I jump, startled by the voice. I look up from my homework only to meet Liana's eyes. She snickers, sliding into the seat across from me.
"Sorry I scared you," she says, covering her mouth with her hand, suppressing her giggles.
"I wasn't expecting anyone, that's all."
"Do you want me to go then?"
"No, that's not what I meant," I say with a shake of my head. "What are you doing here, anyway?"
"I was just gonna grab and book real quick, but I figured I'd say hi," she pauses, resting her chin on her palm. "I was also wondering if you and your friends were planning on doing another date night."
I frown. "No, and I don't think we'll be doing another triple date anytime soon. Foster and Pat broke up," I inform her and her eyebrows shoot up. I hate to tell other people Foster and Pat's business, but sometimes there's no better way to explain certain things, such as this.
"That's unfortunate. They were cute together," she says, sighing. "But that doesn't mean we can't go ourselves."
Wait, wait, wait. Is she asking me out....on a date?
"Uh, I mean, yeah, we can, like, hang out," I mumble, fumbling with my words.
"Hmm," she examines her nails. "Yeah, we can, but can we go out?"
I freeze in place, unsure what to do or say. I don't like Liana like that, and I'm not really sure how to say it without hurting her.
"I, uh..."
She shakes her hand, placing her hands in her lap. "It's okay, Tony, I kind of expected that to be your answer, anyway. I can tell you like Liz."
I choke on my own spit, coughing into my elbow. I look at her like she's crazy. "What are you even saying? First, you're proposing a date with me, and now you're saying I have a crush on Liz?" I ask, incredulous. Liana just smiles.
"You still haven't admitted it to yourself yet?"
What is going on? I feel so uncomfortable, and embarrassed. I'd like the ground to open up and swallow me right now, please and thank you. Liana is staring me down, waiting for me to say something, but I have no idea what to say.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about," I sputter, crossing my arms.
Liana chuckles. "I mean, if you don't like Liz, does that mean I have a chance?"
"That's not how that works..."
She smiles. "See? That's what I thought."
"Wait, no. Just because I don't like you like that doesn't mean I like Liz."
She shrugs. "Yeah, I suppose you're right. But it's pretty obvious, you know?"
"We're just good friends."
"Good friends who stare at each other? Who go out together all the time? Who spend the night at each other's houses?"
"How do you even know about any of that?"
She chuckles. "Foster."
He's dead.
"Foster talks about stuff he doesn't know anything about," I tell her.
"Yeah, but he spends a lot of time with you, so I feel like his beliefs are valid."
"Beliefs?"
"His belief that you two like each other."
