Chapter 5

I never imagined myself running into a library and smashing into someone, resulting in four people turning into dominos.

But here I am.

I ran right into Charlie when I came into the library, which made him stumble and push Nathan, who fell on top of Liz. To anyone else, I'm sure it was funny, but Charlie is screaming at me, while Nathan tries to push us both off him, Liz squirming beneath him.

If I wasn't in the middle of this, I might've been laughing.

Mrs. Toth comes over and gives us a look of utter disapproval. "Get up, please. This is a library, not a game of football."

"Sorry, Mrs. Toth," Charlie stands up after pushing me away. "I never was a fan of football, anyway." Charlie always was a suck up.

"That's great, but what are you four doing anyway?"

"I actually ran into them all," I say, getting up from the floor.

"Well, apologize to them, then," she smooths back her graying hair. "And please don't tackle them in the library ever again." She turns and walks off.

"Yeah, sorry," I say, facing Charlie and Nathan.

"Whatever." Nathan pushes past me with Charlie, who sends me a glare.

"You okay?" I ask Liz.

"I'm fine."

"What were they saying to you?" I ask, though I have a feeling I already know. Charlie and Nathan are the school's biggest douchebags. They're like the stereotypical bullies you see in movies.

"What does it matter to you?" Liz sneers. "What do you think they were saying?"

"I'm sorry, Liz."

"Don't. Just leave me alone. You're the one who got me into this mess in the first place."

"But—"

"Just go away," she says and stalks off.

"I got you into this in the first place, so let me fix it."

Liz turns to face me and glares, her eyes narrow slits. In this moment she looks like a cat ready to pounce on her prey. "No, Tony," she spits my name out with so much venom. "You'll probably only make things worse. What is it you really want, anyway? Why me? Liana is after you, you know. Go to her, not me. I want nothing to do with you, okay? Stay away from me."

"Please." I feel so desperate now. I don't even know why—Liz isn't my problem. I don't have to sit here and deal with her crap. But I can't just let her kill herself.

Liz's face softens, but only slightly. "What do you want?"

"Let me fix this. You have no idea how bad I feel about this. I feel stupid enough already; what was I thinking that I could possibly go bowling with such a pretty girl like you? Just please, let me at least try to do something for you?" I ask, and Liz's face turns pink at my compliment. She tilts her head down towards the floor, her dark hair covering her face.

"Why, though?"

"Why what?"

"Why do you want to fix this? Why do you even want to go bowling with me?" she mutters, crossing her arms and refusing to look at me.

"I...think you need a friend. I like you, Liz. I didn't mean for this to happen."

She shakes her head. "It's not like it's your entire fault, anyway. They're always jerks to me."

"They are?" Why haven't I noticed this before?

"See? You don't even pay enough attention."

"Oh, I'm sorry that I don't stalk you every minute of the day. Is that what you want, then?"
