Chapter 16

Exhausted, I walk into work, my shoulders slumped down and my pace slow. When I enter the kitchen, my coworker, Max, gives me a pitying look. "You're not looking so good."

I sigh, pulling on an apron. "Just had a rough night, that's all."

"Everything okay?" he asks, scratching at the scruff on his chin.

I hesitate, unsure if I should divulge into last night's events. I cave, figuring there's no harm in talking to him about it and start explaining how Liz texted me and I rushed over to make sure she was okay at 3 AM, only to kiss her and then be rejected.

When I'm done, his brows are up high on his forehead and his lips are parted slightly in an expression that can only be described as shock. "Woah, dude...that's rough."

I rub my face tiredly. "What did I do wrong?"

He pauses, staring thoughtfully. Max is in his early twenties and is finishing up his last year of college, so he must have some sort of advice about girls. "You're gonna have to ask her that, man. Unfortunately, I am not sure what goes on in the mind of a girl, so I can't explain it. I will say sometimes people push others away when they're afraid, so maybe just give her a few days to relax."

I nod. It's not much, but I'll take it. My phone buzzes, and I check it to a text from Foster.

"I could really use a distraction right now," it reads. I sigh before texting him that I'm at work and will distract him as soon as I get out. Maybe I'll take a power nap before, or grab an energy drink of some sort.

"What's the best energy drink that actually works?" I ask Max as I go to wash my hands.

"Rockstars are my go-to. They've got some organic ones that are really good. "

"Thanks. I'm gonna need something after work."

Max chuckles. "Don't worry too much, kid. It'll work out."

I sigh. "I hope so, but it's not just that. One of my best friends is going through a breakup right now, so I have to distract him, too."

Max stops what he's doing, blinks, then shakes his head. "Man, I do not miss being a teenager."

After work, I stop by a close by gas station and pick myself up a few energy drinks, deciding to try one of those organic rockstars Max recommended while also grabbing something I know I like, just in case. On the way home I pop open the rockstar, finding it's quite to my taste. When I get home, half of my drink is gone, and Foster's car is already parked outside at the curb. I step in my room to find him lazily draped over my bed, feet hanging off the edge, texting. Foster looks up from his phone when I walk in, raising his brows.

"Uh, Tony? Why do you look like hell?"

"I didn't get much sleep," I tell him, walking to my closet for a change of clothes. I'm slightly disappointed Foster is already here, because that means I can't take a quick power nap. It's probably for the best, though, because I'd probably forget to set any sort of alarm and Foster would've found some messed up way to wake me up, like pouring ice cold water over my face.

"Clearly," he leans up, tossing his phone next to him. "Why didn't you, though? Trouble in paradise?"

"Liz texted me at 2 something, and I ended up going over to her house to make sure she was okay," I tell him, grabbing a random pair of jeans and T-shirt.

"You did?" he asks excitedly, jumping up and waltzing over to me, resting his shoulder against the closet door. "Did anything happen?"

"I kissed her," I admit tiredly before taking a sip from my drink. Foster blinks, staring at me.
