The whole car ride was spent in silence. Stevie seemed lost in her thoughts, Lindsey was afraid of opening his mouth and risking an argument. Let her be, he kept repeating to himself, just let her be. The traffic prolonged their journey too, they were barely moving. Lindsey had to stop the car yet again, he began tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and Stevie immediately turned to glare at him, forcing him to stop. He sighed and turned up the radio to block the sound of her heavy angry breathing.
"Wait, I'll get the door." Lindsey jumped out of the car once they'd arrived, but Stevie didn't obey and roughly pushed the passenger's side door open. "What did the car do to you!" He yelled out, watching as she marched up to the front door of their house.
Lindsey didn't follow after Stevie right away, he needed a moment to himself. This was not part of their plan. After the long talk they had, where both of them screamed at each other and eventually cried together? No, they didn't plan this.
With a stack of papers and all sorts of leaflets given to them earlier, Lindsey entered the house and listened, trying to locate Stevie. At least Avery's not here, Lindsey thought, their 8-year-old daughter was blissfully unaware of what was going on between her parents as she was spending a big part of her summer with her grandparents in Arizona.
"Stevie, we need to talk about this." Lindsey said loudly, hoping that she would hear him, wherever she was.
No response.
Lindsey took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose. The bedroom, he guessed and jogged up the stairs. The door was already closed, indicating that he should not go in under any circumstances.
"Didn't you hear me?" Lindsey asked, now standing in the doorway. "You can't just ignore me, you know? Sooner or later-"
"Well, clearly I do not want to discuss this now." Stevie interrupted. "And you can leave, you don't have to stay here. Not for me." She added, shooting him a look.
"I'm not going to leave you like this." Lindsey shook his head, arms folded over his chest.
"Like what? Are you scared I'm going to do something stupid?" Stevie scoffed, making her way into the walk-in closet for a change of clothes.
"I didn't say that! Did you hear me say that?" Lindsey remained standing where he was, waiting for her to reappear. "Stevie-"
"I'm fine." She held up a hand to silence him as she dropped her clothes onto the bed. "What's there to talk about anyway? This changes nothing." She shrugged, reaching for the hem of her blouse, she pulled it up and over her head.
"What do you mean? This changes everything!" Lindsey yelled out, throwing his arms up in the air.
"You couldn't wait to get out of this marriage a month ago and now your mind's suddenly changed?" She asked, dropping her pants too.
This was not the time, but Lindsey couldn't help it as his eyes focused on her almost naked body. He shook himself mentally, remembering that they were in the middle of a fight.
"It wasn't like that." He shook his head. "This is what we both agreed on. We both came to this conclusion, don't just blame me for it."
"I'm-" Stevie paused and sighed heavily. "I'm not. I just have a lot going through my mind right now."
"Well, then talk to me." Lindsey softened his tone of voice and took a couple of steps closer to her. "Stevie, I know that this is not something we thought would happen, but... it did." He finished with a shrug.
"That I do blame you for." Stevie pointed a finger at him. "Breakup sex!" She exclaimed. "What are we, 18?" She shook her head at their stupidity as she reached for a tank top to change into, she then pulled a long flowy skirt up.
Lindsey had remained quiet while Stevie redressed, no longer so sure that divorce was the right and only decision. He turned around and slumped down on the bed, he leaned forward, putting his head in his hands.
"We're having a baby." Lindsey said through a deep exhale, at the worst time possible, he added in his mind.
