Author's Note

Hi there! I know a few of you are still waiting for the AeI epilogue, and I hope to get to that soon. I didn't feel like I was in the right mindset to write that this weekend; I didn't want to write the epilogue half-heartedly and mistakenly have loose ends. I was, however, able to write this chapter. I hope you enjoy. Please keep me in your duas. I pray you all have been well. As usual, I would love it if you all vote and leave your thoughts in the comments! Much love x💫

Alizey's P.O.V.

My eyes stared at the time on the corner of my desktop.

4:58 PM.

Two more minutes and then I can clock out and finally go to pick up my car.

I'd hitched a ride to work with Harris this morning. My elder sisters were caught up in their usual rush to get ready, so neither of them could have afforded the detour of dropping me to my office.

As soon as the clock hit 5:00 PM, I logged off and stood up with my bag, fast walking to the machine on the wall to clock-out.

"You look like you're in a rush to get out of here," Susie remarked with amusement as she finished swiping her employee card. "Meeting up with a boy?" she bounced her eyebrows playfully.

"No," I chuckled while I began punching out after she stepped way, "I have to pick up my car. It's at the mechanic shop, remember? I told you yesterday."

"Oh! Right. I thought you got it this morning."

"Unfortunately not. My cousin dropped me. I have to catch the next bus," I dropped my card into my bag before we began walking to the elevator.

"Aw. I would've offered to drop you, but Aaron and I are joining the other girls and their boyfriends for dinner. You know, our usual monthly get-together. We can't be late for our reservation."

Aaron, her investment banker boyfriend. Susie and a few other girls from the office started this tradition of going to dinner with their well-to-do boyfriends once a month.

"Oh. Where are you guys going?"

"It's a rooftop restaurant in downtown. I'm so excited! We are going to have drinks under a cabana after," we stepped onto the elevator, "Ugh, when are you going to get a boyfriend so you can join us, Alizey?"

"I ask myself that question too haha," I flashed a faux smile.

I had no interest in their little kitty party. From the stories she's told me, the girls spend the evening boasting about their boyfriends and gossiping, while their boyfriends either discuss work or sports and even subtly flirt with the other girls in the group. It all just makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn't fit in with them nor did I want to.

"I'll ask around for you. It'll be so much more fun when you're there."

"You don't have to do that," I shook my head politely.

"There's no harm. Have you tried any dating apps? That's how Eleanor met Harvey."

To my relief, the elevator door finally opened when we reached the lobby. "Uh, I'm not too sure about them. I'll see you tomorrow. Have fun. Bye, Susie!" I took off towards the main doors.

"Bye!"

I hopped onto the Metro and tapped my electronic pass against the scanner. As I sat next to the window, Fawad returned to my mind. I was surprised at myself how I'd spent nearly all day looking forward to seeing him. I didn't understand it. Here was a man that I practically knew nothing about, but it felt like I was drawn towards him. Perhaps my curiosity about him is what makes me wonder about him. He was a mystery.
