Adoptive parents weren't common

Let alone adoptive parents that

EL LAID ON the couch beside Mike, resting to gather her strength. Penelope looked off at the wall, stomaching what had just happened. She hadn't fully believed Eleven had powers, but now she couldn't even deny it. It only confused her further.
She took a small glance at her wrist, the tattoo sticking out of her long sleeves, before pulling them up. She glances back at Eleven, who was already staring at her.
"Like home... like home... but dark?" Mike thought out loud.
"And empty." Lucas added at the table. Mike stood up to pace around while they brainstormed.
"Empty... and cold." Dustin sat on the edge of the stairs. "Wait, did he say cold?"
"I don't know the stupid radio kept going in and out." Lucas huffed.
Dustin sighed, resting his head to look up at the ceiling. "It's like riddles in the dark." He muttered.
Penelope stayed focused on El laying down by the couch, zoning out. She wasn't paying attention to a thing the boys were saying, only thinking about what El had done and how. And if it was related to her past.
"Like home. Like his house?" Mike thought aloud, holding his hands out, still in his jacket pockets, as if to ask the others opinions.
"Or maybe like Hawkins." Lucas' eyes went wide with a realization.
"Upside Down." El muttered. Penelope was finally engaged in the conversation, seeing as El finally spoke after the incident at the school. She rested her head on her knees, looking up at the boys while they brainstormed. She tried to make sense of it all, but dead ends seemed to pop up everywhere.
"What'd she say?" Lucas looked to others.
"Upside Down." muttered Mike, finally catching on. Penelope sat up in her chair, wondering what had clicked in his brain that hadn't clicked in hers.
"What?"
"Upside Down." Mike walked over towards the table, sitting at the chair beside Penelope. "When El showed us where Will was, she flipped the board over, remember?" He took their D&D board and flipped it back upright, then flipped it back over for emphasis. "Upside down. Dark. Empty."
"Wait, so like- Oh! I get it now!" Penelope perked up, her back straightening out as she finally understood what Will and Eleven were saying.
Lucas looked to Dustin. "Do you understand what they're talking about?"
"No." Dustin pursed his lips together.
"Guys, come on. Think about it." Mike said.
"That's why El took us to Will's house." Penelope explained. Mike gestured to the girl, as a way of saying that's what he's trying to explain.
