I wonder if Sam is home yet. Alice starts to cry for some reason. "Alice, calm down."
I hear a rustling noise, then a creak, but I don't turn my head. I focus on soothing Alice back into silent tranquility and see Sam walking down the stairs.
"Oh, hey Sam! I didn't even realize you'd gotten back. I was almost at the conclusion that you stayed later than you were supposed to."
Sam shook her head furiously. "What? No! I would never."
"Okay. Why don't you head to the kitchen and make a snack?"
"Alright."
It looks like Sam breathes a sigh of relief, but why would she do that? I'm going to rephrase that. Sam sighs, and walks to the kitchen. "You okay, Sam?"
She turns. "What? Oh. Yeah, I'm fine. Just... tired. From school."
"Do you need help with anything? Projects, homework?"
"Nope, I'm good."
"Okay. Tell me if you do."
Sam nods, grabs a small bag of chips, and heads upstairs.
